Is it just me, or is this course *bullshit*? its mainly common sense, and half the questions i could do without knowing the course.. im doing pretty well at it (havent done trial yet, but coming like second or something..)
The main problem with it is that its scaled down which sucks, but also that it just hasnt taught me a thing about anything that i could possibly use in the real world.. oh yeah, and cause i) my teacher sucks and ii) all of my class suck, shes marking everyone (admittedly me as well) way to highly and hence, come uai time, mine is going to get ripped down...
any comments/ replies?...

well i am not inclined to say that it hasnt taught me ANYTHING that could possibly usei n the real world...

i mean, i applied my knowledge of Microsoft Access from IPT into the development of an information system i developed for my parent's business...its definately made their lives easier and its definately something i find satisfaction in!!

Also, if you are a year 12 student who aspires to be in a business/IT career(like me) the things learnt in IPT are quite useful! Granted, some of the stuff learnt in ipt has no practical use nowadays (like calculating how many bits in an image etc)

Now refering to the "my teacher sucks"...i believe there is a general shortage of quality computing teachers in NSW and the majority of NSW feels the same way hehehe

If you really do feel like you are marked too generously, try and think of it as competing against "huy" ;)
I think he sets the benchmark...so the aim for all aspiring IPT students is to equal or better huy! :D

Where do I start :) Yes, the course is in fact "bullshit", but don't let that deter you from studying or trying your best. Half of the questions are common sense, but there are a handful of subjects that I could name which have concepts/ideas that are also "common sense" and "bullshit".

Being a scaled subject doesn't necessarily mean that you'll get a bad mark. What happens if you've got a student on 100%, who is in the top 1% of the state? Would be still be scaled just as "badly" as another student sitting on 75%?

Not all teachers are the best, and I've had my teacher for 4 years now. The teaching method is simple, and I don't really have a problem with the style, because I'm used to it. Reading, answering questions, if you need help, ask. Go home, answer questions, read, sleep, wake up, repeat :p That's easy for me. But I like to answer questions for students who may have difficulty with the subject. At the HSC marking centre, nobody will be marking, say, every second IPT paper as generously as another paper. It's all the same! :)

Hehe, I don't mind having competition, it only means that I've got to extend the lead and broaden the gap. That, in effect, will help you as an IPT student, and myself in understanding and realising more about myself.

IPT isn't an "easy" subject - you've still got to work for your marks as in any other subject. (I am defending IPT :)) I understand where you're coming from when you say "it's bullshit and it is mainly common sense" -- this is true, but only to a certain extent. If you sit for your Trial HSC paper or the HSC exam, you will probably just pass if you talk in the broad or generic sense. Without using any IPT terminology, references to IPT, concepts, and so on, you'll be getting half-marks for every full mark, I would say.

For example, given a 4 or 6 mark question, you couldn't possibly answer the entire question with a 6/6 response, without having known a little bit about IPT, or even some of the methods/ideas in IPT. If you're doing pretty well at the subject, try and extend that lead. See how far you can go in comparison to other students. If you're already 1st, then there's nothing you can really do because your rank is all that matters and the relative differences between students. This doesn't mean that coming 1st in IPT with a mark of 60% will equal another student, at another school, also undertaking IPT with a mark of 90%.

It is true, given last year's 2002 HSC scaled means, that IPT lies in the 23/50 range. Now, if you're a top student, in the top 1 or 2% of the state in IPT, then that's saying something about you as an individual. What this means effectively is that you will have a better advantage when it comes to scaling. I'm not an afficionado when it comes to the HSC, but I know there are benefits in breaking the gap between an 'average' performance and an above-average performance.

For example, when it comes to rankings for IPT
The first ranking student can be on: 90%

2nd: 80%
3rd: 75%
4th: 64%
5th: 50%
.
.
.
Last: 15%

Your performance, in comparison to other students, will be far superior to the average. Let's say you were 1, 2, or even 3 standard deviations above the average, you can't tell me that it's not going to benefit you when it comes to scaling/your UAI. :)

I'll reiterate my points. Yes, the course isn't exciting or the best HSC subject out there. But if you're putting in the effort, you'll get what you deserve in the end. It is common sense, but you can't get by on common sense alone. If you're coming second, why not aim for 1st place? Just because a subject is perceived to have 'bad scaling' doesn't necessarily mean that you cannot make a difference. You are relying on past/previous HSC year's with different candidatures. Maybe this year is different? Who knows? You might even see IPT sky-rocket to 30/50 as a scaled mean mark :D (Fingers crossed?).

If you haven't learnt anything which is useful to a real-world scenario, what have you learnt about yourself as an individual? Any realisations? accomplishments? achievements? personal goals? What have you learned about your peer group? How are they coping with stress, how are you coping with it? How is your time management? What about assessments? What were they like? If your teacher sucks, why don't you attempt to ask some other students who are more capable (say the 1st ranking student, or if you're 1st, extend yourself beyond your own potential - if that made any sense ;)). If your entire class sucks, and you're performing well above the average, (by 20, 30, 40 or even 50 marks) -- you'll benefit in the end. If your teacher is marking everybody way too highly and generously, you can't complain! Until it comes time for the HSC, then you'll be having HSC markers, who don't know who you are, marking your paper against criteria/outcomes/guidelines and sample answers. They won't look at your Student Number and think: "WOW! This number is odd and ends in a 5, so I'll give it an extra 10 marks". (I have lame jokes, I know). If your UAI is going to suffer, then you can always focus on the HSC exam, it's not impossible to achieve 100% in the HSC examination. What will that mean for your assessment mark? How does that affect your overall scaling for IPT as a subject? Who'll reap the benefits?

I'm not really interested in the IT career/path, or even Computing in general, but it's a subject that I do, just to see how well I am, what I can do, in comparison to other students. Afterall, the UAI is a ranking, not a mark.

I'll shut up now,
Good luck in your studies, especially IPT :)

Lucky you find the HSC course easy...
I found the prelim was, getting like 95%
but HSC is hard for me now, 62% maybe? hahaha..
I'm in year 10 so maybe that's why it's harder for me... I wonder if I would have been easier if I did start it in yr 11 rather than yr 9 >.<
... yeah the course is a bit BS... but what can you do

95% for the preliminary? You're hot on my heels... I crept into the Band 6 range for my Year 11/prelim.

HSC is another story, that's for sure.

You should take a look at my Year 12 report/marks.
My Year 11 marks, if they were to be used in the UAI would really "kick ass". But in stark contrast, my Year 12 marks aren't crash hot... but it goes back to the difficulty of the subject and the pressures involved during the final year of schooling.

Also, year 11 preliminary marks were never scaled so I'd say that years 11/12 marks are even, if you've kept up the good work :D :D

it is true that IPT is *bullshit*, and that half the questions are common sense. BUT the other half are not common sense, so it is of high importnace to know the stuff that 'isn't common sense'. Only knowing the common sense answers will only get you 50%. Im sure all of us want a mark much much higher than that.

I wouldn't worry too much about getting marked easily at the moment. Its goiing to look good on your report, and it sounds like you are aware of the situation, so you shouldn't be disapointed when the results roll around in December. You mentioned that your rank is 2nd. From my understanding, that is the important thing. Good rank should lead you to a better mark than others at the school.

Theres my two cents....

Cheers

it's quite a good course if you're wanting to do something a bit bludgy.

Take Huy for example. I'm sure he turns up to class just to play games while topping his year in IPT.

Close!

I turn up to class everyday, and I sit in the same seat everyday.
We have computers, but I can't remember the last time we really "used" the computers! It's that bad.

An IPT course, without actually using computers!
We generally copy out overheads, read the textbook, answer questions (writing it out in our books), checking the answers, doing homework, and finally checking homework. And we do it all over again the next day :)

That's what I like, routine.
Today: Exercise 2.1
Tomorrow: Read the text, know Exercise 2.2 information/paragraphs.

Tomorrow's homework: Exercise 2.2

We don't get to bludge at all.
We have to sit there in class, and listen to miss talk, read the overhead, read out answers, or pick kids to answer questions.

I like it :)

that's right, you people have things called 'textbooks' now...

we did about 3 case studies in the entire year.

The rest was self-research.
It was a bitch too. The research we found was done on ClarisWorks on Macs... luckily I do have ClarisWorks at home.

No wonder only about 10 people passed IPT in my school (out of 70)

lol, oh no... Our school the year before was something like that too. At first our teachers let us TYPE our answears onto the computers and the teachers would check that. But then she found out that we were playing multiplayer doom in the background and so she took us to a classroom for theory lessons... thats when I quit. lol :p

We had about 25 kids in our IPT class at the beginning of Year 11 (prelim).

At the end of the preliminary, we lost a bit under half the class.
Now we've got 17 students.

Out of the 17, I would say that there are 3-5 who have "passed" IPT. :(

Similar to Johnilicious, our teacher would let us type the answers on computer and word process everything, now we've got to write everything out in our books and we'd read them out (answers).

The "Internet Explorer" icon is just too tempting :)

We can't download anything at our school with file types other than .txt, .doc I think.

Not even .zip or .pdf! (We don't even have Acrobat Reader installed!)

The school's Internet policy doesn't allow for such downloads as .mp3, .zip, .exe and so on. We can't even access www.hotmail.com or the MSN network (Messenger)anymore! :chainsaw:

lmfao.. i just found this post again when randomly surfing the net... yeah ok, so it is bullshit.. we do a bit of work in our class (mainly "theory" or just playing whatever we can on our school computers whilst copying down notes of the board...
heheh the main problem with IPT is that like half is common sense, thats good, but the other half is just plain, as i said, bullshit, however you would probly know most of it if youve a bit of a nerd (no offence :p) and have worked with computers a bit.. which i havn't.. damn... (W T F IS MAIL MERGE??? ITS IN EVERY F_ING EXAM) just random shit like that which stumps me in exams, hence y i need to study
well ive just found out from my english teacher how its scaled.. person who comes first in the class gets the top UAI in the class as their HSC mark essentially, same with 2nd, and so on.. that sucks bad cause i screwed up physics, IPT and english (ie 3rd :p) so ill have to work well in them.. anyhows yeh
thanks for your input anyhows
