Then who do you suggest take that responsibility?

O'Keefe is promising I guess.

I do agree about O'keefe but I would not have dropped Krejza after just two tests. What more I wouldn't have picked him for one day matches, he is an attacking bowler who is likely to take wickets at some expense, clearly ill suited to limmited overs cricket but possibly of great value in the test side. Failing that I wouldn't have picked a specialist spinner when clearly they add so little to the side, opting for Katich to bowl the aggressive spin if need be and Clarke to do the "tie up one end" sort of bowling. With Watson it would be a bit excessive to pick four seam bowlers so I'd probably pick another batsman, perhaps the other Hussey.

I think Katich himself said bowling aggravated his shoulder hence he didn't do it much, check his cricinfo profile.

Krejza I guess was simply too expensive for selectors' liking and who knows, his 8/215 and 12 wickets overall in that India match could have been a fluke.Hhe didn't do that well in Perth if I remember.

Needless to say, we do have an issue with picking a spinner.

That was a few years ago now, he's well recovered now, he was on the radio last summer saying he was bowling in the nets as much as any of the bowlers and from memory had actually started to do a fair bit of bowling in games shortly before he was dropped.

Yeah because Perth is known for being such a great spinners pitch. Even still, being dropped after just two matches was hardly a decent trial.

Marsh opens ODI's with watson, or its warner in recent times.

Well, people kept telling me how Marsh never got a go and now he has one... maybe Hodge will get a chance soon?

Damn, forgot about the... attitude the selectors have to age. *sigh*

But 36? I could've sworn he was younger than that... but I suppose you're right.

Hodge is probably the best player in history to not be a permanent part of the Australia team, although he was stuck behind once in a century players such has pointing, hayden, langer, gilchirst etc. before that the Waugh brothers and not. If Brad Hodge was in his mid 20's right know pretty sure he would be captain instead of clark.

Its like the scott prince scenario for queensland's state of origin team

The axing of Katich was definitely a disgrace on the part of the selection panel, and I guess Katich just needs to blow off some steam. I mean he was never being recalled so what he says now is basically irrelevant. I have to ask, though, why all the hate for Clarke? He's a very professional player and captain (youtube Mahela Jayawardene standing his ground in one of the SL tests and how well Clarke diffused the situation) and averages 45 in both tests and ODIs. He has 23, 60, 13, 6 and 112 in his last 5 test innings and 46, 38*, 47, 44, 1 and 26 in his last 6 ODI innings. As a middle order batsman that's precisely what you want.

I'm actually just watching Hodge carve up the Ryobi Cup at the moment. I'm fairly certain that most of the reason Hodge was never a regular player has to do with Ponting and the way he ran the team.

Without Hodge, NSW would probably have the game wrapped up but you never know their batting is a bit suspect

TBH I dont like clarke but his last over against India a few years back was one to remember

Hodge's peak from memory came at a time where Australia's batting was nigh invincible already. There has always been a reluctance to tamper with effective combinations and given the Hayden, Langer, Ponting axis at the top order and Hussey's Bradmanesque start to his career, there was only ever two batting places on offer and he was competing with Martyn, Clarke, Symonds, Jacques and Katich for those spots. By the time the retirements started I think Hodge was probably seen to be past it and a band aid solution.

Yeah once the retirements started, hodge was 30 already and the selectors were looking for a long term fix.

He had to be axed sooner or later because of his age, but yeah I admit, he was one of our best batsmen by a while and right now our opening pair look very vulnerable (ie. Hughes).
Micheal Hussey... About the same age. Currently one of our most in-form batsman.

Katich was there long before Clarke was. He should never have been dropped, and there was no reason to drop him. Appalling waste.

He conceded himself he was struggling in his first phase with the team and deserved to be dropped.

Why all the hate for Clarke? Well... from my view, I don't think he's Australian captain material.

That, and I get a vibe that he's a pretentious wanker. To be completely honest with you.
