heaps of people take laptops (including macs, I use a 2011 MBP, will probably buy a 2012 if released), but a word to the wise, they can get pretty distracting and they are unnecessary for some classes such as maths.

oh and with tutes, some tutors may ask you to put it away as it can be a barrier between learning and participating

I was told to put my laptop away during a psychology tutorial once while I was taking down notes on what the tutor was saying + I was the most engaged in the class. I never liked her after that moment.

you sure as shit don't need books then

take the lappy, easier storage space and you can take down ultra specific notes instead of general pen and paper ones

then you can cross reference them with your lecture notes if your lecturer(s) provide them

Not so much pretentious but more or less - 'Why would you bring it? You don't need it.'

It's not something you're judged on as university students generally don't give a shit but it's easy to tell who brought it to procrastinate.

i'm doing b commerce-professional accounting at mq uni, would i be needing to take a laptop to uni?
will it be significantly easier/faster for notes etc.? or too much effort carrying it around and what not?

yes make sure it has 16gb ram because Macquarie's accounting department uses really taxing programs on their special computers

so it'd be easier if you could avoid the line and just use it on your own laptop

No, there is no point of bringing a laptop to uni unless specified by a course co-ordinator or you wish to work on an assignment or something along those lines on campus.

What's the most efficient laptop to get for uni? My budget is $500 - $700

I need suggestions on what brand I should get

what laptops do you guys use?

Maybe its Usyd, but I noticed a lot of people carrying around Macbook airs last year. As for laptop functions, unless you are doing design or something special, you will only need microsoft word (to take notes in) and firefox/chrome/explorer.

Choose a small-ish laptop that is cheap lol (after all, it *is* going to be rattling in your back pack for the foreseeable future). How about the $300 one that I always see being advertised?

I would highly recommended Toshiba. They are durable and reliable and are reasonably priced

Macbooks wouldn't fit in your price range and youd wanna wait for the 2014 model if you did (few months away).

On the other hand, take a look at these hybrid tablet laptops;
- Surface Pro

specs dont matter because its a completely different OS. just like how iPhones need less RAM than androids.

chromebooks a good op if the only thing you'll be doing is browsing the web. You can do docs in google docs (i did this for HSC even on a normal computer)
