How helpful is a laptop at university?

Is the use of laptops for notes accepted in Science courses? I won't be going till 2010, but just want to prepare. Did you like making a folder of notes or using your laptop better?

Also, what sort of laptop will do? I want to be as cheap as possible but having a high end desktop computer, I don't know what to go. I know pretty much all hardware terminology, so will a laptop with these specifications (I know some of them have no effect) have any problems, slowdowns, etc. running XP with Office 07 programs plus Firefox and some other extras:

Ram: 1GB
HD: 120GB
Processor: 1.86ghz Celeron M

Well there's a whole lot more but other than mentioning I was looking at an Acer in this case, what do you think? I'm pretty sure it should be fine. By 2010 I'll probably be able to get a much more powerful laptop for the same price ($500). Answering my own question, I think it should be absolutely fine running anything other than games, so my main question is about how helpful it is.

I used a laptop for homework, assessments, and tutes. Using the laptop in lectures was a distraction and i usually ran out of battery. So i used paper.

Well wait 2 years 1st, but something that operates Microsoft Office (probably has to be Office '07 by the time you get to uni (because the uni's will porbably upgrade to Vista by then). So yes MS Office, and a large, long lasting battery, wireless - thats about it.

is about what i've got and its pretty much good for word processing (will play a few low graphic games).

tbh i would wait before you buy a laptop for uni. Prices get lower and lower these days. Plus the unis are starting to offer student deals with laptops.

il reply when i find out after the first week of using a laptop if its worth it or not.

Obviously u wouldnt take it to practicals, tutorials might be good for it and lectures probably aswell.

What Brand Should You Get?

I recommend apple all the way, come on, get a macbook!! There so slim and beautiful, long battery and definitly be fully equipt to run the latest windows on it with no trouble, its so good!!! I definitly be getting the lattest macbook pro when i go to university!!!

no point of having a laptop unless you go to UWS where they give you unlimited downloads from anywhere. uncluding torrents and stuff. even then you will hardlyh use it.

The only real reason people buy Mac laptops, is because they think they look good, which is a retarded reason for buying it.

Otherwise, there's crap like multimedia software, etc.

Needless to say, the best thing I would suggest is a cheapo dell laptop with barebone XP and openoffice.

Haha, yeah, I suppose I'm going over the top. Its mainly because I want to leave home when I go to Uni so I'm trying to work out my money seeing as I also want to take up Kendo so I'm trying to save up for a laptop plus the initial kendo equipment so I can put my income into food, shared rent and other stuff.

personally i'm a firm believer that laptops are pretty useless for lectures because it's so inefficient at taking notes/diagrams in most courses.

eg. think of how long it'll take to do the following with a laptop and your standard office program:

maths: to write an equation out
economics: to draw a few lines to make a graph
chemistry: to draw a molecular structure
physics: to draw a three-body diagram/diagrams
engineering: to draw diagrams

Damn, dude. Don't worry about it till then. The longer you wait the better a deal you'll get. Technology improves like lightning and prices go down, by the time you head to uni you'll be able to get a laptop way better than what you specified for the same price that is now.

Not unless you get a tablet(bloody expensive though), and yeh you wouldn't want to bring a laptop into wet science pracs. So stick with pen and paper.
