Well all I've got to say is: how hard are some of the law readings? It's not the actual concepts that make it hard, it's just the fact that the authors use the most frustratingly complex and long ways to explain something which is, essentially, very simple. It's taking me about 5 or 6 times longer to read a page!!

What are everyone else's thoughts? And how far are you guys into the readings? I'm up to about page 70...so that's only another 30 something pages to go and I've finished for Week2! YIPEEEEE!

wow! ur so far ahead! ive only read the first 3! lol but im planning on reading the rest (well some) today during my lunch break.
yeah, they crap on about things that they could put much more succinctly. i didnt mind the law v custom one. but im finding the stuff that they covered in the lecture is much like the debates in legal studies over the difference between law, custom, obligations, rules etc... hopefully it will become more interesting

i have to wait until year 4 to do family law! :(

im guessing thats because in law you have to be clear about your words, ie you cant exactly leave anything to assumption, you must have every base covered no ?

Umm, so do u want the bad news, or the bad news? Hrmm...nah it does pick up some.

You have to think about utilitarianism...Would u torture a baby to save the lives of a stadium full of people?

I actually like the stuff we're doing right now though, I'm just disturbed about how a lot of the writers find it necessary to explain a simple concept with several 10 line sentences....

I mean some of the writers are really good - they are concise and get straight to the point...but some (e.g. Hart) just goes on and on and around circles.

Nah, not fully. Hart opposes the "command theory" but he's pretty much a positive lawyer.

Fuller is opposed to Hart and he was a good read because he went straight to the point. In Fuller's essay he describes Hart's piece as very contradictory and hard to comprehend. I fully agree...I can't completely grasp exactly what Hart is trying to say...he seems on the verge of a point but not quite ever fully enlightening us on it.

But rambly stuff is good. Hart gives u the most to write on for the take-home exam essays.

Gah I hate those stupid course notes! It's so waffley and goes around and around in circles. I find it very ironic how the books and tutors keep telling us that we have to be clear, concise and succinct, while those course notes were anything but. I found I had to read it (sloooooowly), re-read it and highlight bits that were important (or at least make some sort of sense) and then rewrite/summarise the notes so that I can understand it fully.

I'm finally done with first week readings and questions (for tomorrow's tute), and I'm hoping to go through the other 70 pages of week 2 reading so I'm not once again totally lost in the lecture.

BTW is anyone here doing mooting? I gave in my form today, but I feel like a bit of a nigel since I don't know any other first years doing it. Damn propaganda, I hope it's as fun as they make it sound.

It's challenging and fun. Not to mention very daunting at first. Requires a fair bit of work, but it's worth it. If you're not in a team they'll put you in one, so not to worry.

I'm doing Senior mooting but I'll probably go see the junior final at the courts as well. Pancakes at the Rocks after guys...it's become tradition for me and the other mooters/atendees.

Negotiation and client interview in semester 2.

Really good to see all the first-years getting involved! Rock on!

Belinda: would you happen to be Thao's friend? Yeah I wanted to do mooting but I have no group to go with yet...gotta find a group first and then I might start mooting.

I agree about the concise/succinct thing. The "good" law essays aren't concise at all...

^^ I'm so nervous about it! The last time I did public speaking was back in year 4 and I've never done debating either. Gah, hope I don't stuff up terribly. However, I am looking forward to it. When does it start btw? Mmm... pancakes. Makes it all worth it eh?

Sure am! You her bf? Join, join! I have no group either! We can be two nigels! If you are joining, you better do it ASAP, as the last day was last Friday, but you might be able to still go and ask.

I find it's alot easier to follow lectures if you read ahead. 2nd week was more understandable than first week anyway.

Yeah, I'm her boyfriend.

Wanna form a mooting team with me? I didn't know there was any deadline! I'm sure they'll still let me in!

I wanna form a team of about 4 or 5 people...I might be able to grab 1 or 2 people.

Sure thing, just go to the Law common room (W3A 328) on Monday morning or something and ask them. Just say that I'll be part of the team too (I doubt there is another first year law student called Belinda doing mooting). Hope to see you there! :)

Haha, well they organise a small function for us with some tasty finger foods, champagne etc after the moot. Held at the sponsor firm...clayton utz for juniors and freehills for senior. And then we usually do pancakes..
