Hi!

Was wondering if anyone knows about the differences in reputations between UNSW and Usyd for maths degrees? I'm considering doing a maths/compsci double and it seems that UNSW has a slightly better reptutation for compsci but I can't seem to find much online regarding maths, and their QS rankings seem to be fairly similar. Any advice would be really appreciated, especially from people who have done maths/compsci at either uni!!

Thanks so much for your time!

Honestly they're both equal in terms of teaching quality. However, the general rep for UNSW is a lot better (not sure why, this is just generally among students they will choose UNSW over USYD for those courses unless they get a scholarship for USYD). I would argue UNSW has better social life, extracurricular opportunities and societies which may be beneficial for networking opportunities (not biased, I go to USYD). But definitely consider transport and convenience, definitely will make a difference when it comes to 8am lectures (tbh moreso than uni rep, it's better to get a student that has a HD average bc they attended their lectures than a C average student bc they were cbbs travelling 1.5hrs to get to uni).

The difference in USYD vs UNSW O week is massive, the 'yellowshirts' that volunteer for UNSW O week undergo months of intense preparation and because of this, become really good friends. They event rent out airbnbs to live near campus during the OWeek period, have many social nights and spend a lot of time prepping together. Compared to my experience volunteering for USYD's O week equivalent which is VTeam, it's only one day of training before the actual O week. Just comparing my personal experience with my friends that did yellow shirts, UNSW definitely has more opportunities to foster friendships.

UNSW has more active societies too and opportunities for executive roles for each subcommittee. USYD does have plenty of societies too, but they're definitely not as active with events and roles. Not that USYD doesn't have fun societies, the UNSW ones just have more roles and portfolios to be a part of and a larger team in general.
