I am thinking about getting into Medical Science in UNSW, and i wonder what kind of stuff do this course focus on?

It must be different from Medicine, and i want to know if it's base on Bio, chem or physics?

And also, It this degree useful in getting a job??
Thanks

Yeah
I've heard from friends that Medical Science on its own gets u jobs in research or academia
However its a good to do as an undergraduate degree in preperation for graduate Medicine

but is it possible for me to apply for a transfer to Medicine as well?that will take a much shorter time than spending 3 years in Medical Science and then 6 years in medicine :)

I wouldn't recommend doing med sci before postgrad med, because really, its too much. If you are going to do post grad med, fine, just make sure you go great in whatever degree you do (that interests you).

Just remember that med sci is more a research degree, its not going to make you a doctor, and unless you are part of that top 10, its not going to make your life particularly easier either when you get into med.

and to survivor39, you wouldn't have to do 3 years med sci then 6 years med. Postgrad med is 4 years I think : )

I'm assuming you mean IVF (in vitro fertilisation) -not IFV, then you will need to become a doctor, and therefore do med either at undergrad or postgrad level.

What are you doing at the moment?

i am still in year 12. and yeah, i meant IVF....

If i do postgrad, it will take me 7 years, 3 in medical science and 4 in medicine. one the other hand, if i do transfer, it will also take me 7 years, 1 year in medical science and then 6 years in medicine.
so i am better off to do postgrad right? that way i'll get B MedSci as well as B Medicine? instead of just B Medicine

ok, well it also depends what uni you want to do med at. UNSW only offers med as undergrad (with the specialisations being postgrad), while Syd Uni only offers it as postgrad. Have you considered other unis? (Their entry requirements aren't as harsh as these 2 unis).

Yes, you would have 2 degrees in that 7 years, but thats if you want to persevere with a B Med Sci for 3 years (obviously not what you're really interested in) -and assume that you'll be able to get into the postgrad (I'm sure the competitions tough), whereas with the transfer, you'd be in there from 2nd year learning the real stuff that you're interested in :)

So, I'm guessing you sat the UMAT but don't feel too confident? Remember that B Med Sci is still around a 93.something UAI, some rural students got into UNSW Med last year with 90, and some non-rural got in with 95 (but I think they blitzed the UMAT and interview).

Oh yeh, and you need a bachelor degree with a credit average as a prerequisite to get into that postgrad med program -and you'll have to sit the GAMSAT, which I guess is like the UMAT all over again -I'd sure hate to do a 3 year degree then stuff up that test.
:)

actually i really wants to do medical science and see where i can go from there, such as research and stuff.
i didn't do the UMAT test so i am trying to find an alternative.
so if i can get into medical science, that's great. on the other hand, i am equally interested in medicine.

no, i never thought of ANY other unis besides UNSW. let alone other states...... (my parents will kill me if i goes to ANY other uni besides UNSW)

and plus, what future do i have if i graduated from medical science and stop there?
And what is the addtional year of Honour thing?
and also, what is it meant when in the UAC guide say: "Demand for this course (medical science) is high..." does it mean the course is hard, or does it mean there is a lot of work?

if your interested in med sci, thats great. Its just a fair few people have the delusion that they're going to transfer to med from it when only 10 can actually.

When they say demand for this course is high, they mean the UAI is generally high (its normally around 93). They say the same thing about most courses that have a UAI above 90 I think. It doesn't really mean its a hard course -all the demand/UAI reflects is how many students want to do it.

The people I know that are doing the med sci haven't said that its hard. I know a girl that got a conceded pass (they let her pass even though she got below 50) on a mark of 28 out of 100 ! (that was Higher Chemistry).

I'm pretty sure the 'honors' is you conducting your own individual research for a year. You get to graduate with a B. Med Sci (Hons)
:) :)

As you said, research is probably as far as you can go, or maybe become a lecturer. You might be able to get some position in a pharmaceuticals/medical company, but then again, that would be more likely given to a pharmacist not a med science grad I think...

thanks Patricio, i think i will just go do medical science for 3 years and see where i can go from there. (maybe get employed by the uni itself :) )
if my mind still sets to become an IVF doctor, i'll just sit the GAMSAT test and see how far i can go in medicine. :)
