Damn you people for beating me to the forum!

I have however created threads in the "Other Universities" forum as instructed by fatmuscle,

here

Someone answer questions please? :)

I got interviews for both Monash and Adelaide too, though I'm still hoping for UNSW med.

Does anyone know if Melbourne interviews, and when? Because I forgot to apply to them, and they said I can still do it late since I've already done the UMAT.

Yeh i got one for Monash. Is anyone going? I'm not cos i'm over med. What do you do to decline? They said they were going to send some other thing out with the date/time of the interview, but i didn't see anything about what to do if you don't want it.

Melbourne doesn't do interviews and their cut-off date was the the VTAC cut-off date for timely applications (30th September). However unlike Adelaide or UNSW they don't seem too anal about enforcing strict cut offs and if they say they'd still accept them...go for it I guess.

Email them or something. Since at this point they assume that you still want it, there's no real form to say you don't. Just send something thanking them for the offer but you've since decided to withdraw your application blah blah. A letter, email, fax, or phone call should do it.

What a sad outlook. What about Newcastle, the best Medical School in Australia? Or Melbourne, the only university to offer Med/Law?

Are you sure it's Monash? I could have sworn it was Melbourne, but I haven't checked in a week so I may have gotten mixed up.

Well that makes things easier for me then. Since Monash has my ultimate course (well, one of two potential ultimate courses) should I bother paying the $15 preference edit fee (f--king VTAC) and applying to Melbourne as well?

Thanks for the heads up by the way.

That's very untrue. Unless you are handpicked to become a registrar after your MBBS (or BMed) and two years internship, you will NEVER progress to postgrad study (specialisation) and hence will be forced to work as the lowliest non-student doctor until you decide to hang your stethoscope in shame. One of the many important factors looked at in application for postgrad medical positions is the initial institution, as their reputations for turning out good doctors often affects the decisions made regarding your future. Aside from that, a good institution is more likely to give you excellent interaction skills, and this is reflected in the number or registrars selected from different institutions each year.

but isnt your results gonna count more?

take law for an example, its like getting an HD avg at UTS gonna mean more than a C at Usyd... ...i think...:D

Put simply, your results in university don't completely reveal how good you will prove to be as a doctor. Your performance in the field (ie in a hospital as an intern) is a lot more important than your performance in exams. :)

Of course, the better medical schools tend to produce better practice in doctors because they teach with superior method. Hence the "ranking" per s of Australian medical faculties. That's just how it works all over the world, there are some institutions recognised as superior to others.

Of course, your individual results will matter. But what happens when two doctors of apparently equal calibre from different institutions are in contention for the same position, who gets it? If neither are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander types, then it's the one from the more prestigious school (university that is).
