Melbourne CBD 'safer than public perception'

By Lauren Wilson

  • Number of attacks not as bad as public thinks
  • Melbourne CBD safer than at start of decade
  • But attacks are more violent, police admit
THE Melbourne CBD after dark is not the violent and lawless jungle many of its residents have begun to think it is.
Police statistics provided exclusively to The Australian show that while the population of the Melbourne city centre has increased 18-fold since the mid-1990s, the number of assaults recorded in the city has risen at a much slower rate.
When the population growth is taken into account, the chance of a resident being attacked in the inner city today is lower than it was in 2002 or 2003, and about half what it was in 2000.
Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe said the potential for a city resident to be attacked, "is far, far less than it was. People have been given the impression it is war out there and it's not", he said.

On top of the CBD population surge, Melbourne City Council estimates about 771,000 people come in to the CBD daily - with 40 per cent of those being "night users" of the area - and on average about 5.4 assaults a day occur in the city.
"It hasn't been as bad as what the perception is in the minds of the community," Mr Walshe said.
"There will always be assaults - we can have police on every corner of every street, but that's not going to stop everything happening."
However, what the statistics failed to show was that the assaults had become more violent in recent years, he said.
And the police are increasingly finding themselves the targets of street violence.

wtf that makes no sense if the rate of assaults per 100,000 has gone up violence has increased. They are dividing by population twice.

rate of assaults has gone down
red line goes with rhs axis data
black line is lhs

ie number of assaults has gone from 1300 to 2000
but
rate of assaults has decreased from 14000/100000 to 6500/100000 over the same period

meaning

assaults are down
because
population has increased by 18 times or something silly

even though the amount of assaults are up

So basically, the raw number of assaults have nearly doubled over just a couple of years, and they want the residents of that area to not be worried...lol

This is the best bit
However, what the statistics failed to show was that the assaults had become more violent in recent years, he said.
And the police are increasingly finding themselves the targets of street violence.
So assaults have doubled, and they are much more violent[i guess that means more murders, stabbings, gun crime etc rather than your standard pub bashing] AND police are being targeted. Heh what a great place to live in.

I guess this resent case doesnt help.source: Twin sisters in all-girl gang bashing | The Courier-Mail

A bunch of hoodrats gang bash and mug people 9 on 1. When police confront them, the girls assault the police, the brother brings out a bat. Court verdict: no criminal record, no jail sentence, 18 months probation.

nice message right there: its ok to gang bash people, its ok to mug them and its ok to assault police. You will only get a slap on the wrist, you wont even get a criminal record.

2000 assaults is 5/6 per day in the CBD alone.
