well yeah metadata is information about the data.

an example is a data dictionary. a data dictionary gives comprehensive description of each atribute (field) in a database. therefore giving information on the data.

hope this helps :)

Another example: XML.

For example:

<car>
<make>Holden</make>
</car>

'Holden' is data. '<car>' and '<make>' are examples of meta-data, ie. they give information about the data.

Does that help? :)

thats a strange definition, what site is that from?

this is from an online dictionary i found:

Data about data. Metadata describes how and when and by whom a particular set of data was collected, and how the data is formatted. Metadata is essential for understanding information stored in data warehouses.

Yes, hi.

In my opinion the easiest way to remember it is to think of HTML code. (or vB code in this case)

For instance:

<b> tells the browser to display the enclosed data in bold.

<i> tells the browser to display the enclosed data in italic.
