Moving to Sydney..Good idea or not? (1 Viewer)

Depends whether you think you can handle the move, not just some fancy whim of oh yeah I'd like to move out just cos I think I can, or whatever. My friend moved from Melbourne to do Media and Communciations at USYD because it was the only uni that offered this particular specialisation at the time he was doing his HSC. He loves Sydney, and has really made something of himself here. But he says it's hard--no family, having to work to pay your rent, etc. So it all depends.
Basically everyone who goes to USYD loves it. You really can't know how good it is if you've never been here though.
I've had a lot of experience with Cityrail though and it does suck ok
but i've never been to Melbourne so I can't compare it. It's probably just the idea of change thats appealing to you.

Well, Sydney being massive, has a whole lot shit areas.
Sydney is expensive.
Newtown is probably the cultural centre, so to speak. Newtown is good.
The good thing about Sydney is you can find a niche area/areas that suit your tastes, whatever they are.

seroiusly don't get why ethnicity has to play a part in this conversation...if you lived in a society with a single ethnicity, its not like there aren't going to be less criminals or less douche bags roaming the streets....
there are goods and bads for every city...
Sydney:
bads- bad urban planning/infrastructure, public transport system gets more and more crap the further you are from the city, bad/congested roads, crap state govt
goods- weather is better than melbourne i heard
Melbourne-
goods - awesome urban planning/infrastructure, public transport seems good around the cbd, better road system, better restaurants/shopping (so i heard)
bads- no beaches close to cbd?, weather is a bit more grey compared to sydney, some bum asked me for money and actually insisted on wanting the gold coin...

Sydney CBD transport is actually pretty good! Its heaps cheap too. And Sydney has good restraunts but melbourne probably has better shopping...CloudStrife said:

I actually went to Sydney after I made this thread lol I was just too curious (in the school holidays ofcourse) and it's sooo different to Melbourne. I don't know how to describe Sydney...it's just different. I don't mind that place, the trains are so mad you can go upstairs or downstairs and you can also change the seating directions!!! Well I'll go there and visit again after exams so yea haven't made up my mind yet but i have applied to the unis through UAC just incase.
Oh btw there is a beach close to the city called the St. Kilda beach right next to Lunar Park and the weather is hectic over here..its windy and raining atm and yesterday was humid. It's actually common to have the 4 seasons in one day!!

That only refers to guys that look rough or tough because staring is a sign to start trouble only if your staring at the right peron. If you stare at a rough guy and you're a girl I don't think they're take it negatively. Plus everybody stares it's kinda normal

Sydney and NSW on a whole are the biggest shitholes in australia. State gov has fucked everything up. Shit transport, shit people, fucking expensive and our economy is fucked .
Stay im melbourne!!! You have better sports, its cheaper and have a slightly less retarded government.

No. Don't do it. It costs a fortune to live in Sydney unless you have some very generous relatives or friends. On average it is still way cheaper to live in Melbourne. Once you finish your degree though, you'll be able to go anywhere. Good luck with that!

to the OP: how would you deal with the residential side of things if you were to come here? University colleges? Rent? Any rellos up here you can stay with?
Sydney's alright (depending on where you are of course!). I'm not sure about Melbourne, but Sydney tends to get kinda scummy the further West you venture. Having said that, it's not the case with every suburb (I went to Paramatta today and the station is soo nice, possibly the nicest station I have seen in all of Sydney; and the mall is huge!! Not too shabby AT ALL!)
Eastern Surburbs or Lower North Shore are the most expensive (therefore, comparitively devoid of crims / junkies), and most of these suburbs have either water or harbour views, or have nice tree-lined streets, so they are really pretty. i.e: Vaucluse, Rose Bay, Kirribilli, Mosman, Double Bay, etc. Lot's of old, wealthy, society-types live in these parts.
The Inner West is really cool, trendy, and convenient as it's all pretty close to the City and pretty well serviced by trains. Inner West is where alot of the younger University population live, so it seems like a pretty hip and fun kind of place. i.e: Surry Hills, Glebe, Newtown, etc
Sydney is, as a city; expensive, shallow, vein, and superficial. It is the 'Los Angeles' to Melbourne's 'New York'. You can't compare the two, as they are so different. Personally, I love Sydney; however if I had the time and money to relocate down to Melbourne, I probably would.
NB: I vote that Gold Coast is better than both cities, hands down. It's like our Miami, or Las Vegas lol
