need help making a bootable disc to install windows 7 (1 Viewer)

SO i've obtained Windows 7 Ultimate x64 RTM and i wanna install it on my laptop.

I have the files on my laptop, but i need to create a bootable disc so that i can restart my laptop and boot from disc, because i've already burnt it onto a dvd (ie just copied the files onto a blank disc), and it's not recognised when i start up and select "Boot from CD/DVD" (since it just starts up normally, so im guessing this particular disc is NOT bootable).

Also, i've read on http://forums.techarena.in/operating-systems/1174622.htm that if i have the files on my computer i can simply click on the setup.exe file and install it straight from there, but the following error message comes up:

I'm guessing that if my current OS (vista ultimate 32 bit) was 64bit, OR if i was trying to install a 32bit version of windows 7, the error message wont come up, but i wanna replace my 32 bit version of vista ultimate with a 64 bit version of 7 ultimate, so it looks like i need to create a bootable disc.

How do i do this? I have MagicIso (the trial/free version) and have been fiddling around with it for an hour (and googling plenty of terms and processes), but i cant get it working.

Plese halp?

That's odd. If the files are on the DVD, that makes it a bootable disc.
Did you go to your BIOS and change the boot priority so that boot from CD/DVD is first? (Before hard drive)
Could just be your DVD being incompatible. Get a better DVD.
Better yet, try creating a bootable memory stick. Should do the trick.

Edit: Oh and, try burning at a slower speed (hell, try 1x).

yea i burnt it onto a fresh (empty) disc, i changed priority to dvd first before hard drive (didnt boot from dvd), then i manually pressed ESC during startup and chose to boot from dvd, didnt work.

For a bootable memory stick, does it need to be completely empty and only contain the windows 7 files?

Yep, freshly formatted. I'm not sure what difference it'll make though, I suppose you can always try (who knows, maybe your laptop will blow up :burn

I've had to try different OS's on discs and thumb drives as well - it doesn't matter for what you use to transfer it over (but I imagine there is just some stupid problem acting up with your CD/DVD drive)... so the thumb drive has to be completely formatted as youngminii said.

And oh, I just read youngminii's "Wait does your laptop even have a 64bit processor?" ... and basically no laptops have a 64bit processor! (I have only seen a few... barely any PCs have 'em).

I imagine it's the bit processor problem hahaa. And by the error message I see, I'm pretty sure your laptop is 32bit haha... get the right version!

i think i had the same problem when trying to install windows 7 beta 64bit.. (cant remember how i got it working)

Did you say you just put the files in a DVD?
You need to create an ISO with the files you have. I assume that's what you've been doing with MagicISO?
If not, just do what I said. Create an ISO with MagicISO with the files you downloaded, then burn the ISO onto the DVD using MagicISO once again.

so... i create an iso file, then i extract that iso file onto a blank disc? Isnt that just the same thing as copying the files directly to the disc?

You can't just put the files onto the DVD... you have to actually create the ISO disc. Otherwise it's not going to boot - otherwise I have absolutely no idea!

Putting the files straight onto the disc just creates them as a file - basically they just sit there. As an ISO format they will start up and the computer will read it at start-up as it should do with an actual disc that you purchase from the store.

i'll do that now and i'll report back as to how i went.

(also i'm currently downloading the full version of nero 9 since its probably better/more professional than a free version of magiciso).

edit: Trial version cannot create an iso file greater than 300mb. LOL, looks like i'll have to wait till n9 finishes downloading (ie 10 mins).

You create an ISO 'image' using the files that you downloaded. The ISO is an image of what would be on the disc. You then burn the ISO onto the DVD using MagicISO (so you use MagicISO twice in this process). By doing this, you're putting the image of the disc into a disc, making the disc function normally. I just read what I wrote and wow that's a confusing way of explaining it.

But yes, as aquawhite said, putting the files in the DVD will just cause them to sit there.

No. Create the ISO file, then burn the iso file using MagicISO onto a blank DVD. Otherwise yes, it would just be the same as copying the files directly to the disc. This is not what we want.
Also, there should be a bootable disc option somewhere in that process. I forget whether it's when you make the ISO or when you're burning the ISO onto the disc.

There are many other ISO programs that are better than Nero. Try imgburn, it's what I used for making PSP ISOs which are 1gb+

Using magic iso is simple to make a dootable disk.

go to torrentz.com and download a keygen for it (small file), get the full version and as said before, you have to make an iso of the files.

Its wieird that it didn't download as an iso though. Thats what most files like that do.

When you go to burn it to the disk you have to go "load boot image" then select your iso.

If you don't tell it to make a bootable disk then it won't. At least, thats what happened to me when i tried to make a bootable copy of the windows 7 RC. But doing what i just said works.

i got w7 from some torrent, which downloaded it as a rar file.

oh well, turns out the keygen for nero 9 doesnt work (i keep clicking generate, then copying the serial into the dialog box and it doesnt work, lol), and cbf'd finding any more serials, so i downloaded imgburn.

it looks pretty simple to use. Made an image, burning onto disc.
