Question:
A magazine advertisement is to contain 50 cm² of lettering with clear margins of 4 cm each at top and bottom and 2 cm at each side. Find the overall dimensions if the total area of the advertisement is to be a minimum.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi I'm not sure if I completely understand the question
This is how I interpreted it:

so the sides are (y-4)cm and (x-8)cm but then there's a 50cm^2 somewhere. Where did you get up to? My interpretation may be incorrect

Well I interpreted it the same as you, and I haven't gotten anywhere with the question. I just don't know how to do it.

for some reason I got dimensions: 18 and 9
total area=162cm^2
