telstra has the adsl 2 coming up that offers like 12mbps downloads. Optus capped their adsl2 to only 1.5 mb . i think Telstra is doing sometihng else aswell

Any word on when Optus will increase that adsl2 speed cap? 1.5 is pitiful. (Telstra has that same limit on their infrastructure as well i believe....)

hey wont increase it any time soon. They originally had huge speeds, but then they changed their business plans and only offer 1.5mb.

i dont see why you would go with optus if you are getting DSL/+. so many other comapnies offer better deals

Do your uploads count towards your allowance?

I'm on Bigpond's Unlim (10gig cap) plan with 128k uploads- but I think uploads count towards my 10gig before it's capped.

yes yuo are right, bigbond counts uploads towards total bandwidth.

but optus i better in the sence that it DOESNT count uploads with downloads.
however doesnt specify how much you can upload. But i can safely say 15-20 gigs and you wont get in shit

Optus offer the non-upload counting, but had always capped the uploads to a lower speed, claiming 'strain' on the network otherwise, which is fair enough, not many people need it or use it to the full.

What Bigpond have over us are free mirrors still though, and soon, a decent gaming portal.

A few minutes ago my modem rebooted automatically and as soon as it came back online I tested the speed. I now have 256 kbps upload and a much more respectable (about double previous) 6 Mbps download.

I am on the Optus lite cable 1gig plan + home phone bundle.

1gig is def. not enough! I like the looks of the Sprint Uncapped/128kbps 2GB 2GB peak + 4GB off-peak $49.95 $39.95 ...

How do I change? And is there some catch I am missing because I think I now pay like $50??

With the Lite plan, you actually have to call up Optus to change it for the following month, provided you call 48 hours before the following month. That includes changing from Lite to Advantage.

The only 'catch' that I am aware of is that once you move to the new line of plans eg Sprint, Advantage, you can't go back to the old line eg Lite, Unlimited. But the new plans seem far superior to the old, especially at the lower end.

yeh . but you have to remember that with the old plans, people get free months.
so when calcualting, you have to remember that people dont pay for a few month and the actual cost for the year is greatly reduced. Plus its hard to compare for example the old 12/24 gig (128k) plan to the new 7/14 (256k) plan. you lose download aswell

i think the best thing for people who have old contracts is to stay on them. Becuase they still get the upload increase and the offpeak times are 12 hours long now. and u can still keep your free months.

From the guy I spoke to at Optus, it seems that if you stick with the old plan you still have 2-9am off peak and 128kb upload, although he could be wrong.

Personally I don't see much point in staying in the old plan, seeing that I don't have any free months or extras.

Im probably going to move to PrimusAOL's network when my TPG contract expires... They installed their own DSLAM in my Rockdale exchange, which means i'll be able to get 8mbit. Unfortunately the only mainstream rollout of ADSL2+ is by Internode, and they're focussing on the major areas in Sydney first (Newtown, Redfern, City, Parramatta).

iinet have a large ADSL2+ DSLAM rollout as well and TSN are putting in quite a few of their own too.

I just wish someone would hurry up and put their own DSLAM in my exchange, either ADSL1, 2 or 2+ would be fine, either of the 8, 12 or 24mbits respectively possibly on them would be better then 1.5 >.<

I think Telstra capped ADSL at 1.5mbit due to trying to squeeze as much profit out of it and their cable plans as possible while the demand for higher speeds wasn't that great, but I think they misjudged the demands a great deal...I'm looking forward to when BPL has been refined and passed testing and is rolled out with capabilities of 200mbits+

yeh thats becuase the new packages, still offer only 128k to the lower plans
