I am not an atheist or a practicing Christian, although I don't think religious holiday trading bans should be forced upon all.

Well, back when the settlers came to Australia, the majority of them were Christian and with them, they brought the English common law, which were based on Christian ideals. That could be why that law exists. Though, why they haven't changed it, to adapt to newer times, I'm not sure.

shouldnt u have a stash at home from a buying spree the previous day?

But yeah I dont really get the law either considering that a large proportion of the population is atheist and couldnt care less about the religious significance of the holiday.

If christians dont want to drink today, that is fine and understandable. If others do, why should they be stopped from buying a drink?
^ This.

Christian lobby has both sides of state politics in their pockets. They wish that their beliefs are imposed on us all, arguing that if we don't retain these last vestiges of christianity our entire civilisation will fall.

This is why we should put religion aside when deciding how to conduct ourselves as a society, because it's completely nonsensical and backward

is it actually enforced? or is it like one of those lingering old-time laws like the one in the US that says "the butterflies cannot fly over the lake"?

yes, it is enforced. breaches of most commercial/trading laws (e.g. liquor laws) work on a strike system (i.e. 1 strike, 2 strikes, 3 strikes etc), and you can bet that shopkeepers aren't going to be stupid enough to risk a strike just for trading for an extra day. similarly their license can be frozen on the spot, have monetary penalties imposed, etc.

liquor trading aint no fuckin game

Don't laws such as "It is illegal to steal" and "It is illegal to murder" originate in religious texts and teachings...?

Yes, the ten commandments are directly responsible for Australia's anti-theft and anti-murder laws.

Not really no, they are just often attributed as such due to the synthesized concepts of religious virtue and ethics at various points in history. I suppose it's possible that one religion derived its concept of ethical values from the primary source (a deity) but given the diverse range of religions, the failure of some cultures to come into contact until recently and the fact that these concepts of humanism predate any contemporary religion it can't really be argued that they come from religion generally, as much as some religious folk will argue to the contrary.

You see the difference between you and I is that I managed to say virtually the exact same thing without being obnoxious. Maybe you would have benefited from coming to mass this evening.
