Nuclear energy is the only effective stopgap to help massively cut our emissions as a nation. Nuclear reactors are less radioactive than Coal reactors, by the way.

Ok some people here a worried that the company will have the ability to do whatever it wants but I don't think that's true. As long as the electricity companies are made to compete against each other then they have to provide cheaper electricity and good service.

Furthermore it will give people the freedom to choose which company they want to join. Just like ISP's and the internet. Originally broadband was out of reach for the average person but as competition was introduced soon broadband became cheaper and this also allowed people the freedom to chose from a wide range of companies. I think the same thing can be done for the states power.

the retail sector of the power industry was privatised several years ago... it works the same as the telecoms industry where isps buy wholesale bandwith from telstra (a private company - whereas in power they buy wholesale power from the gov... so we already have this 'competition'.

The issue is the wires and plants... if someone owns these they have a monopoly - no company is going to build a whole new power grid to 'compete.' If we look at telecoms, where telstra owns most of the wires you can see why there is so much bitching about the price of wholesale ADSL bandwith - thank goodness optus is there with its parallel network to provide some competition, even if it is a duopoly

It can be implemented rapidly without requiring further development. If you want to propose an alternative, go for it.

Optus doesn't use Telephone wires to connect people to their phones. Optus lays down Fibre to the individual houses. Which is why it's hard to put people who are with Optus onto ADSL2+ with other providers.

Oh yeah 100% man. No smoke or ash as it's just a fission pile heating up water and pushing a turbine. Nuclear has negligible emissions, IIRC.

NSW gov would melt down there is no way they could afford a fission power plant.

What's the capital required to start up a plant? ~$10-20bn?

Get rid of state governments, just compare the number of politicians we have for a country with such a small population to other countries around the world. There is no need for three levels of government bureaucracy for a small country, and we might have less incompetency then.
