as with nebz, i don't see how this will add anything to the classroom experience which cannot be taught by conventional methods. in fact my concern is that kids will get distracted by surfing the net and chatting online. waste of money imo.

In yesterday's Sun Herald, it says that each laptop will cost $2245 per student. WTF, these are supposed to be mini laptops! You could get a much better laptop with that kind of money.

Yeah, but that $2245 also includes infrastructure like servers, cabling, wireless access points, etc. $2245 is still a bit high though.

they'll configure it so you can't modify the system and you'll have to login with a DET username and password. but you can install software on it.

and i don't think you'll be having lan parties anytime soon, these laptops are destined to be a somewhat useful piece of shit.

this is absolute crap. every other grade has managed without one, so why should these kids get them such because we are growing technology wise? Besides, in exams their writing will get slower if they constantly type rather than actually practise writing. Total waste of tax payer's money.
