How do we compare between students state by state anyway? The top students of NSW sure as hell ain't equivalent to the top students from, say, NT.
The Northern Territory is combined with South Australia and then both are treated as a single entity.

A particular ATAR attained by students from different states doesn't mean that the students are equally smart or have mastered the same content - it just means that, for tertiary admission purposes, the students can be treated as likely to perform at about the same level at university.

What the fuck fucking fuck fuck does "Being compared to your year 7 group" mean anyway?
It means that your ATAR ranks you against the students with whom you completed Year 7 rather than the (smaller) group who went on to complete Year 10 -- that was the purpose of the UAI -- or the (even smaller) group who went on to complete Year 12 -- that was the purpose of the very old TER.

It's meant to be an 'age cohort' rank - i.e. comparison with everyone your age in the state whether they stayed at school or not.

It seems anyone who got 99.75 UAI or above pre-2009 has a 'slight' advantage, wherease those who receieved a UAI 99.15 or less has a slight 'disadvantage' in that between those values, UAI = ATAR

99.75 and above the number given for the UAI > the number given for the ATAR, with same ranks

wherease 99.15 and below the number given for the UAI < the number given for the atar with same ranks

It gets more and more different so that a 30 UAI is now a 36 ATAR - does that mean the '*' will still be given to a similar amount of people, but they will say '<36 ASTAR' instead of '<30UAI' ?

Governmental Philosophy: If it ain't broken, fix it 'til it is.
This!

@pwnage101:

Yes, pretty much, it's pushed up to 36 because it will include more dropouts between year7-12

and LOL school leaving age being pushed up to 17 in 2011, sucked in for people who wanted to leave after they were 15

Until we have a unified national curriculum, ATARs will, essentially, continue to function as NSW ATARs, VIC ATARs.
It seems funny that they insist on doing it now instead of just implementing it in line with a unified curriculum...what's the use of the standardised name if it will continue to function separately??

It's one step closer.
Everyone's already making such a huge fuss over this tiny change. If the whole curriculum was changed, everyone would be in an uproar.
People don't like big changes.

So THAT was the thing that was nagging me at the back of my mind when I was typing up that post.

Anyway, look how that turned out.

This seems to be a political thing to me. By making a smallish change now it will be easier for them to implement the national curriculum in a few year, because the name of the won't change, so people won't take any notice. But I still don't see how the Federal Govt is managing to snatch education from the states. Education has always been a state thing, andto give it the the Feds is just stupid IMO.

ok so I was looking at the conversion thing on the uac page and every single uai is increased as an ATAR rank except 100. even if you get 99 as a UAI it goes up to 99.05 as an ATAR? wtf??
how can every mark bar the top be scaled up??

The confusing thing is that on the conversion table thing, one ATAR might be the equivalent of 2 different UAIs. That's just weird.

Well, I'm personally not stressed about this, just means people who think they're perfect now have to realise they actually are not, and never will be :) bad lck for them. on the other hand, I feel it's quite a negative system - rounding down instead of up, makes all the difference in the world. This legislation seems quite unnecessary to me, but in the other states that have a very different alternative to the UAI: will they find it very different? And I have my doubts on the long term impacts - they say it won't really affect our marks, but we won't know until we do the thing will we? Just going to stck to what I know: try my best, no way to get around a rule every single person in the state has to conform to too.

Re: NSW to dump UAI!

Everybody makes mistakes
Everybody has those days
1, 2, 3, 4!

Everybody makes mistakes
Everybody has those days
Everybody knows what, what' I'm talkin' 'bout
Everybody gets that way

Everybody makes mistakes
Everybody has those days
Everybody knows what, what I'm talkin' 'bout
Everybody gets that way, yeah!

Sometimes I'm in a jam
I've gotta make a plan
It might be crazy
I do it anyway

No way to know for sure
I figure out a cure
I'm patchin' up the holes
But then it overflows

If I'm not doin' too well
Why be so hard on myself?

Nobody's perfect
I gotta work it
Again and again
'Til I get it right

Nobody's perfect
You live and you learn it
And if I mess it up sometimes
Nobody's perfect

Sometimes I work a scheme
But then it flips on me
Doesn't turn out how I planned
Gets stuck in quicksand

But no problem can't be solved
Once I get involved
I try to be delicate
Then crash right into it

But my intentions are good, yeah yeah yeah
Sometimes just misunderstood

Nobody's perfect
I gotta work it
Again and again
'Til I get it right

Nobody's perfect
You live and you learn it
And if I mess it up sometimes

Nobody's perfect
I gotta work it
I know in time I'll find a way
Nobody's perfect

Sometimes I fix things up
And they fall apart again
Nobody's perfect
I know I mix things up
But I always get it right in the end
You know I do

Next time you feel like
It's just one of those days
When you just can't seem to win
If things don't turn out the way you planned
Figure something else out
Don't stay down, try again, yeah!

Everybody makes mistakes
Everybody has those days
Everybody knows what, what' I'm talkin' 'bout
Everybody gets that way

Everybody makes mistakes
Everybody has those days
Everybody knows what, what I'm talkin' 'bout
Everybody gets that way

Nobody's perfect
I gotta work it
Again and again
'Til I get it right

Nobody's perfect
You live and you learn it
And if I mess it up sometimes

Nobody's perfect
I gotta work it
I know in time I'll find a way

Nobody's perfect
You live and you learn it
'Cause everybody makes mistakes
Nobody's perfect

(Nobody's perfect)
No no
Nobody's perfect!
good song that one

but the uai was never a percentage, it was a PERCENTILE =]
meaning, if u say a uai of 100 is a perfect score (here the criteria being that noone beat u!)
that will still apply to the atar, with 99.95 now being the 'perfect'

how wrong am i??
:bomb:

what im very confused with is why this atar thing seems to favour 'lower' achievers??? for eg: the uac table says that a 60 uai is a 64 point something atar while a 99 uai only jumps up by 0.05...

eh.
