At this stage I am doing 4 chapters of Central Material (so I suppose about 1000 words per chapter) is this a reasonable choice or should I be looking to lose a chapter or two?

i suggest maybe trying to merge one with another, only because its more difficult to go in-depth sometimes if its too separated. However there have been prize winning pips in the past with 4 chapters i think, so its not necessary. Theres no formula to how many chapters you should have - its more important that you do as many as your feel necessary for your topic. Also you can use subheadings within your chapters, if that helps.
