No I was more wondering why only he out of the 3 kids he mentioned (including him) went to boarding school and assumed they sent him there and let the other ones rot in the local one

but I assume it's got something to do with his family moving or something idk

edit: maybe it was only one other kid at the same time but idk that was actually really hard for me to read

why don't we just build a channel from the ocean to the middle of the Simpson, then we could farm rice there

well we already have a channel piping water from the struggling murray darling system into the desert around here and griffith

why not the simpson.

i was wondering about irrigation the other day actually, when i had to drive to griffith. every 2nd paddock was submerged (~30cm deep, several hectares in area). what are the requirements for growing rice? is there something about this area that it needs, or is it just that the murrumbidgee (historically) has decent flow around this time of year. the amount of water they must lose to evaporation (its 32 today and they irrigate from early sept to mid dec) is mindboggling. doesnt seem like a very efficient practice? i wouldnt care if it was done in the kimberlies or somewhere with larger amounts of water (ord river?). i know they irrigate in kununurra, why not just based all irrigation up there. they get massive amounts of rain this time of year from the wet season, and its not like they have a shortage of land to use

free up this area for less water intensive shit like wheat (best area for wheat anyway)

hope the murray darling plan destroys the rice industry here

yea that area is buggered, 60% of Australias water ussage is in the murray darling basin, yet only around 40% of our annual food production comes from that area?

well for what it is, it is ultra productive
its only like 1% of australias farming area producing 25% of produce etc
but it could easily be replicated elsewhere in an area that could cope with it better

it uses comparatively more water because lots of other produce is made using methods that use no water like dryland cropping and sheep etc
whereas the riverina produces rice and fruit

Socialism is not the answer. In its entirety it doesn't work. However parts of it does work and are heading in the right direction towards the answer.
