You are awesome - your daughter is so incredibly lucky to have a parent supporting her like that. Much kudos and respect to you :)
No, I'm not awesome. Unlike almost every other relationship in this life, you don't get to choose your kids and you don't get to choose your parents. While I would kill for my friends, I would - literally - die for my kids. And if I would not presume to put shit on the achievements of my friends, then how DARE I presume to put shit on the achievements of my children.

I can be happy for those other kids I know who got UAIs of 99 without that in any way reflecting on my daughter. It IS possible to be happy and proud of more than one person at one time. It's not only possible, it's an essential part of sanity - if it weren't, none of us would ever have more than one child.

Gah, my relatives have been ringing all day to see how I went! I wish they didn't have to know.

Reprise, I wish I had a mum like you.

I too, have gone through alot of shit in the past 2 years (not pregnancy though) but although my mum supported me through all that, this morning she just really surprised me. She was quite upset, and being really rude to me, saying I have no friends (which is a TOTALLY random comment, considering I had like 100 congratulations phone calls today from FRIENDS) anyways, I reminded her, mum i did the best I could do, I got a band 6....remember all of last year was a write off for me (ie- 1st term of HSC) because I had problems with my brain that were only sorted out this year (long story), then I had post traumatic stress from being abducted and having a needle stick injury so I missed alot of time off school.
She told me to get over it...that is just harsh.

anyways, that was a really long post, I just needed to vent.

Mum is cool now that I changed my preferences, but she was upset this morning, to cut a long story short haha

Aw that suck. I'm not telling any relatives so they won't have anything to bitch about.
Any relatives who presumed to bitch about my daughter's "low" marks would be told "fuck you and the horse you road in on", just as any relatives who presumed to gloat about my son's "high" marks five years ago were told the same.

It's none of their fucking business unless they were there suffering the ups and downs and the moods swings and the crises of faith. You are not trophies, and those people who didn't walk the walk with you - whether that's your parents, your teachers, or your friends - have no entitlement to an opinion.

If you've walked the walk, then you should be equally willing to share the "glory" or the "blame". It saddens me to hear that some parents only wanted to share the glory. It ANGERS me that some of you are even worried about the opinions of distant relatives or neighbours, because they certainly aren't great role models if you're worried about how they'll deal with your HSC results, and if they aren't role models then their opinion shouldn't matter. You haven't failed them. They have failed YOU by setting some arbitrary standard for their approval.

Oh, nah, I personally don't give a fuck, nor does my parents... but it's a bit annoying hearing them rant, that's all. Insensitive people aren't worth it. I'm the one living my life.

RESPECT - an old Aretha song

The point I'm trying to make is that most adults would not DARE make the same kind of negative remarks about the grades of their friends/workmates which they have made about the grades of their children. While you'll always be our "babies", you are now all adults and you deserve a shitload more respect than we should grant to random strangers such as workmates or other adults who happen to be our own age.

If I wouldn't make a demeaning comment to a relative stranger about their achievements, then I'm damned sure I should be ten times as reluctant to make such a comment to someone about whom I actually give a shit.
