Exam Technique
These exam technique hints are taken from a PDHPE Teacher who is also an experienced HSC Marker.
Note: this is just one way of approaching the exam suggested by one teacher, different people prefer different timing and structure for approaching the exam. A lot of people use different timing (particularly allocating less time for the multiple choice). Just do what suits you best.
Exam Structure
Section 1:
Part A: 20 multiple choice questions – 20 marks
Part B: Cores – 2 questions worth 20 marks each
Section 2:
Options – 2 questions worth 20 marks each

- Check your work if time permits
What's Your Strategy?
- What will you read in reading time?
- what section will you start first?
- What core/questions will you do first?
- What will you do if you draw a blank on a question?
Managing Your Time
- Keep your eyes on the clock
- Know how much time to spend on each question
- Use the space provided as a guide to how much you need to write
- If you are running out of time-write relevant information in point form

Your answer will be assessed on how well you:
- Demonstrate an understanding of health and physical activity concepts
- Apply the skills of critical thinking and analysis
- Illustrate your answer with relevant examples
- Present ideas in a clear and logical way
The better answers tend to:
- Have written a plan on the exam paper (this will get marked)
- Have answered all parts of the question
- Do as the question asks - eg: outline
- Have a logical and coherent structure
- Provide depth of detail in discussion, which includes accurate and relevant info
- Provide logical argument that is supported with relevant examples
