Ions in solution
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
mixing which of the following pairs of solutions would result in the formation of a percipitate?

a) silver nitrate and ammonium pechlorate
b) ammonium acetate and calcium iodide solutions
c) ammonium sulfate and copper(II) nitrate solutions
d) calcium acetate and ammonium chloride solutions
e) ammonium bromide and mercury(I) nitrate solutions

i know it has somthing to do with the nitrates, but what is again???

nitrates do not form precipitates :D
look back on your solubility rules. do you have them?

are there some simple rules that i could learn like nitrates are not soluble.......instead of trying to memerise the table??

Well the answer is (e), i.e. mercury(I) bromide would be insoluble.

You should keep in mind the following simple rules:

SOLUBLE
  • All Na+, K+, and NH4+ salts are soluble
  • All nitrate's are soluble (NO3-)
  • All sulfate's are soluble (SO42-), except Pb2+ and Ba2+
  • All chorides are soluble (Cl-), except Ag+, and Pb2+

INSOLUBLE
  • All carbonates (CO32-) and phosphates (PO43-) are INSOLUBLE , except for Group I and NH4+
  • All hydroxides (OH-) are INSOLUBLE , except for Group I and NH4+

These are the general rules you need to learn, you will be examined on many of these combinations in module 3, you will NOT encounter difficult examples like those you originally posted in the HSC.

So, does that help?

George
