If you didn't know what you wanted to get into uni for by end of year 11, beginning of year 12, you probably shouldn't be in Uni straight after HS.

1) If you know a career path, say Engineering, you know you should be doing at least mathematics, mathematics X1 and even X2 combined with physics & chemistry, and if it's the right choice for you, you should be able to do well in high school.

2) If you have a course that you want to do, but perhaps could not get the ATAR required to get in, its probably because you're not ready for it. (With the exception of medicine)(given that you had no un-planned for accidents in HS yr 12)

3) If you did not do well, there are so many options of getting into UNI in Australia that it's almost too easy. (Tafe, Flexible entry etc etc)

In my opinion, high school is extremely easy if you're even a little dedicated to your studies (except for maybe Mathematics Extention 2....still can't do half the stuff in it after my first year in Uni) and the ATAR system is the fastest, cleanest and easiest way for people to get into uni.

TL;DR If you're complaining about the ATAR system being "unfair", deal with it or study more.
