My teacher asked me to do the Physics Olympiad, but I'm in Yr 11, and I was under the impression that the Olympiad was for Yr 12 students, because it contained many concepts from the HSC course. Would I be screwed if I just walked in, without knowing much of the Yr 12 course? Would studying for the Olympiad help?

If you want an idea of the material, the past papers are here: http://www.aso.edu.au/www/index.cfm?itemid=31

A mark of over 50% is apparently considered to be very good (high distinction worthy?), so don't worry if you can't do a lot of the questions.
Thanks heaps. And yeah, when my teacher said 50% was considered good, I was like...'Shit - what the fuck am I doing here?"

I did it in year 11!
The test was crazy hard
Seriously
I looked at the questions, and laughed
Yet somehow I got a distinction!
Woot for resume materials!

I didn't do Question 12 or Question 16. Left out 5 marks because I didn't have time to answer them. =(

So yeah, I'm aiming for a Credit. Dunno if I can even get that.

My friend did it but he found it quite easy.

In saying that that guy who said the exam was easy is extremely good at science.

I found it was mostly easy, and didn't really take the full 2 hours.
+ the first 4 multiple choices were basically the same questions as the '06 paper

I did all the questions except 12, but I didn't hand in my questions 11 since I felt I did a poor job of it. I'm not sure whether or not that was a good decision though

And that's what my friend said. He basically found all parts easy except few.

By the way, what did you guys get for the elephant one? My other friends were talking about how they graphed it. Was there supposed to be a big hump at the beginning because the elephant "leaps"?

my graph didn't have a hump at the start. I think the question was implying that it was after the elephant had already lept, but I'm not sure.

mine was: starts with high downwards force, then went to a high upwards force that gradually lessened (parachute opening), then a short upwards hump for the landing.
