With computer engineering at UNSW and computer systems engineering at UTS, is that a totaly different degree or is it the same with different wording?

And php. How did you guys learn it? I'm in the process of learning php but then can't really test anything out due to lack of php enabled server.

For PHP, I learnt by doing a small project for someone, also using MySQL. Invent your own project.
You don't have to have a webserver on the internet! Make a webserver on your own PC. Use Apache, a free and (most) popular webserver, and get the PHP plug-in. This way you can test out all your apps quickly and securely.

Don't fret! Before you do anything, hop over to Bootdisk.com and get yourself a Windows 98 SE boot disk. If, after LILO overwrites your MBR, you want a clean MBR (and windows to boot directly again), boot up with the bootdisk and "fdisk /mbr" will solve your woes.

PS. There is a way to get Windows to be your boot-loader, but it's a bit harder last time I checked (involves making a disk image of certain part of the hard drive... argh!). LILO is a lot friendler (and that doesn't happen often when comparing Windows and Linux .

Better still, if u have windows xp, boot from the cd and go to repair. In the command promp type "fixmbr", that will make ure windows the default OS to boot (with no boot manager).
Also, when u install linux and have the option of choosing either lilo or grub as the boot manager, select grub. Its allot easier to use and looks better too.

Like Huy said, Mandrake or Redhat are good. They have plenty of wizards and automatic detection to get you on the road. LAN connections will be a sinch with either of them too.

I was running a machine with RH Linux on it as a firewall box, but got rid of it because I needed another machine to host my files/store data, and to host games (being connected directly to the Internet, better connectivity etc, but is prone to attacks/vulnerabilities ).

I had a hybrid network of Windows 98, 2000 and XP, until I decided to overhaul the entire LAN and migrated to XP (a move for the best )
