You know how the alkyls are named in alphabetical order

eg. 3-ethyl-2-methylpentane,

how are halogens AND alkyls listed? alphabetically like this:

3-chloro-2-methylpentane OR
2-methyl-3-chloropentane?

Help would be much appreciated :)

Woops i meant Halohydrocarbons, my bad for the mistake :p

If the sum of the numbers assigned to the substiuents of the parent chain is the same, you would have to list the substituent that comes first alphabetically and then assign it the lowest number. The other substiuents will then the listed in alphabetical order, as usual and their number(s) will be dependent on the first substituent. 3-chloro-2-methylpentane would be the correct name in your example.
