Do you think it is OK for authorities to pick a particular person based on race/appearance/behaviour for further security checks (apart from normal metal detector and xray search) ?

interesting topic.....itll have its pros and cons, but in the interest and safety of other passengers, then yes that they should eliminate every possibility of a terrorist threat.
im sure arab looking people, or people with long beards would be the main focus of attention, and im sure there will be some sort of discrimination involved, however, that doesnt mean an asian or a caucasian wont be subjected to these kinds of checks.

They get you to open up your backpack ,then they run a swob stick thing through the pockets of your bag and then shove it into a machine .Which can then detect whether your bag had any contact with dangerous chemicals.

Most of these checks are also done at random and occur about 1 in 10 people.

Cause nobody would transport drugs domestically on an aircraft.

A friend of mine once stripped down to his undies because the Metal detector kept on going off. Then, he got to his undies and it stopped.

I found it wierd. We were in Japan and he is tall and blonde. They prob just wanted to see him strip

The security checks are only for explosive chemicals. The check for drugs are done by sniffer dogs and those x ray machines.

You seem really curious you keen to let me on your little trip

Its plastic ,the x ray would've of picked up on this by showing an image of a gun with the basic outlining.Where as if it were a real gun(metal) it would depict a solid where the other side of the gun wasn't visible. Also your time crisis gun wouldn't have contained any spring solid metal mechanisms essential to a fire arm, moreover your plastic gun would've appeared in an image with electrical circuit boards inside.Hence they would have been able to rule out you had a real fire arm.

I totally agree with racial profiling...When flying from Heathrow to Kingsfordsmith through HK there was a massive que at customs. If it weren't for racial profiling it would have taken 2 hours to get through but because we were white and middle class we got escorted through the que. Wo0ot

I admit though that it would suck to be negatively racially profiled. but then again im white, male middle class so what do i care =P

Heh my uncle doesn't like travelling by plane because he has worked as a licenced pyrotechnician and it is quite likely that any one of his bags may have some sort of residue from the explosives.

I was on a Virgin Blue flight recently and as everyone was boarding there was a message over the speakers:

Could a Mr Arab-sounding-name and a Mr another-Arab-name please make themselves known to staff?

I lol'd.
