religion textbooks (1 Viewer)

I'm using New Studies In Religion by Terence Lovat & John MacGrath but I find that it's not very good...I've also got the Macq study guide....should I also get the Living Religion text book or will I be ok without it?
(I plan to buy the said textbook off someone from BOS so hopefully it won't be too pricey...)

go to a bookshop and have a look then make your choice.....maybe your libarary has it/can buy to save you $60..if you are doing 1 unit, I wouldnt buy LR as a supplementry book if you have 2 already as you will only use it for 3 units of workkaren.koltrane said:
@ Jade...I agree that its a bad book but whats going to a Catholic School got to do with it? They probably chose it as its the least expensive of the three thatr cover 11 and 12!

No we have a big religious education department. Also the CEO gave our school 'to know worship and love' for years 7-10... but nothing to us

1) Religion as a subject/department (not including liturgy retreats etc) is usually the most underfunded subject in the school due to school certificate requirements in other subjects
2) Funding has to be spread acroos all 6 years .: buying textbooks for you may not have been a priority (if the school provides your books. Im guessing they recommended it as it was the cheapest .: making your parents lives a little easier!)
3) The CEO has nothing to do with subject funding. You would find every school got "to know and worship" (just as P/Matta CEO gave every school "Sharing Our Story") as it is the curriculum/syllabus for Catholic Shools in your Diocese. The BOS does SOR syllabus not the CEO. BTW...you may find that there is a CEO syllabus for 1 & 12-called Catholic Studies or equivalent
4) Most Catholic Schools have big RE dept's due to timetabling and it may be the focus of the school to have ecvery teacher teach RE (for eg). Exceptions to the rule are those schools lucky enough to have a specialist RE dept which limits the teachers with a 1 or 2 class loading...very painful
5) You have a good textbook, its just not the best one!...note this is based on opinion. Lovatt is an expert in the field and his book has some really good stuff in it that the other texts dont have. I dont like it because its too expensive for what you pay.
In reality you shouldnt rely on your textbook anyhow. The syllabus should be your "text", not someones summaries!!

All the RE teachers hate the book the only reason we have it is becase the dept. head loves it, cost has nothing to do with it.

every school gets multiple copies of the syllabus (for free!!) and you can download it from www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au (for free!!)
If the dept head likes it then that is the only reason that is needed....
maybe you shouldnt speak for the staff unless you know what you claim for fact?

My school also had that textbook. Its decent enough to use in class, though i dont know why my school wasted their money for it when we never used it. It makes me appreciate the effort my teacher went through literally photocopying about 1000 pages per student over the HSC from various books, sites, articles etc.

Like I said, if the REC likes the book, thats all that counts really as he/she makes the decisions!
Realistically, there is nothing stopping you from getting another text so I dont know what you are complaining about really... and like I said, the best notes are your own ie use the syllabus

well anyway, back to the topic lol...
I like the Macquarie texts the best. But (I could be getting mixed up here) they're typed for the 2 unit course, I do 1 unit, so yeah.
I haven't looked at Excel much, but the Revise in a month seems okay, but we'll see what it's like post-trial HSC....

We do get Living Religion textbook issued to us - but in our whole time in year 11 AND 12, we've only needed it once. I think that's because our school booklet is a plagiarism of that textbook.
