With the recent visit from his royal highness Prince William, the debates about changing our flag and having a self professed "life-long republican" K Rudd for PM, is a change to Republicism a fantasy or slowing becoming a reality?

For me, the Queen/royal family doesn't interest me too much but is that enough to separate from the country that founded us?

It depends on what type of republic we want to become. I really wouldn't like a full-presidential system, but would prefer a semi-presidential where although the president and his cabinet are not a part of the legislature, he is subject to the houses of parliament in the sense that the houses have a say on what the cabinet decide.

But I kind of like the connection we have with the UK anyway.

no I'm actually really comfortable having a head of state that isn't elected.

I'm hugely against presidential systems, and since becoming a republic would entail a presidential system (because apparently most of the rabble want a president), I'm reasonably against a republic right now.

I dont have a major problem with the UK and i like the connection, but i would also like to see our country make our own way. I am not sure yet if we need to be a republic to do this, but i am not against the idea.

As for the flag....yes it needs to change, it makes no sense to have another country's flag make up a portion of our own..... Canada has almost the same history and relationship as we do, and they have their own flag which is wholy unique to them...why cant we do that?

Only if it will be as stable or improve upon our current system of governance. Our system at the moment, whilst not perfect, is quite efficient - hence it has been running for 400 or however many years that the UK has been using the Westminster system.

Yay, it's ridiculous that our head of state is determined by birth and our flag is too much like New Zealands.

Yeah but she has no involvement in anything and is just a figure head. And her representative in Australia, who does have a role, is chosen by the PM..the governor general. But still, I kind of agree.

I have no problem with the current system. If we have a president, then we become more like USA and France. Do we really want that?

I wouldn't mind a republic but really can't be b othered voting yes, the only change I really want to our current system is to be able to vote for our own governor general, call him the president and then worry about the PM

Don't fix what ain't broke. Like what is actually wrong with our current political system?

I can see what people mean about the flag and I agree to an extent, we should have our own, but it should still in some way or another (IDK maybe just colour palette; red white and blue) acknowledge Britain's extensive role in our history.
