Why are people--and Labor politicians in particular--so obsessed with republicanism? The advantages of constitutional monarchy are well known (and dealt with in previous threads); the Monarchy of Australia is legally distinct from Great Britain's, despite its sharing the same Queen; and Australia is clearly an independent country.

I would much rather live in Australia, New Zealand, Britain or Canada--all constitutional monarchies--than France (into its fifth republic) or the US (with a divisive head of state and a rigid separation of powers).
Technically it isn't.

Technically it isn't.
Section 1 of the Australia Act 1986 states otherwise.

Termination of power of Parliament of United Kingdom to legislate for Australia
No Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom passed after the commencement of this Act shall extend, or be deemed to extend, to the Commonwealth, to a State or to a Territory as part of the law of the Commonwealth, of the State or of the Territory.

Yay, it's ridiculous that our head of state is determined by birth and our flag is too much like New Zealands.
How about New Zealands flag is too much like ours?

The Union Jack wasn't arbitrarily placed on the flag there is obviously a reason it is there you twats.

NZ flag came before the Aussie flag mkay?

The Union Jack was meant to show loyalty to the British Empire which is long gone now.

There is no need for this debate. It was settled by the referendum several years ago and it shows a difinitive answer. Australia does not need unneccessary problems. We are fighting off economic and political threats and we do not need this nonsense to take away from that.

That referendum was eleven years ago.

I believe there is a little thing called heritage and believe it or not white people have it too *gasp*
Yeah white people have heritage, but the flag is supposed to represent Australia and Australians not the white people in Australia and their British heritage.

Personally i think the system is fine how it is. why change something that works. it will add to the unnecessary debt.
