If anyone has experiences with either of these schools, could you share please? :) This is for my brother.

Anything that affected you - teaching, learning environment, culture, extra-curriculars - anything.

So far, points gathered:

Grammar [mostly parent-logic]:
  • More rounded (?)
  • Smaller classes, better facilities
  • Apparently better teaching. That is a good point, considering that a large percentage of the cohort aren't selected (I think) and yet everyone still manages to do well in the HSC.
  • Socialise with non-Asians (lol - well the primary schools he's been in so far have a large percentage of Asians - should he stay in such a bubble or experience socialising with people who aren't like himself?)

Ruse [mostly brother-logic]:
  • Peers on similar level - teacher can talk about more interesting stuff, won't get bored (he reasons this is why he enjoys OC)
  • It's Ruse - top of the state academically.
  • Competitive environment; could motivate him
  • Socialise with girls.
  • He'd probably fit in better with the nerd culture than with the rich kids culture, but that is just a wild guess / massive stereotyping.

About my brother:
  • Not that hard working at the moment (but who was in year 6?)
  • Enjoys writing (my guess is that Grammar would be good for this sort of thing, but that's just a guess, and interests change over time)
  • Doesn't care about sport, but does music/debating/chess type stuff.

Thanks heaps, in advance :)

Grammar has better facilities and from what I heard, better teaching.

Also a wider variety of students. He will also be academically stimulated because the smart grammar kids are really really smart (ruse level or above)

They have a kickass debating curricular and a wider variety of curricular as well.

Having said that, ruse is a fantastic school and u dont have to pay. So if ur bro doesnt have a scholarship or ur family cant easily afford grammar, definitely ruse if he gets in

It depends on personal preference - some people prefer Ruse, others prefer Grammar. Also, just because Ruse is first in the state by a mile, doesnt mean that they are the best school (in terms of teaching staff, facilities etc). Remember, they poach the top kids in the state - if my High School (rank 300) had a Ruse quality cohort, we would have been first as well.

Yup I'm asking as many people as I can. Btw where did you get your info? Did you go to Grammar?

And yeah he has a scholarship so that's not an issue.

Thanks, yep I definitely keep that fact in mind, as I've heard from others that good teachers have been leaving/retiring lately.

I went to grammar for debating and other co-curricular comps, so I know the facilities and strength of the cocurricular first hand.

I got the rest of the info from friends who go to ruse and friends who go to grammar

I have good friends that go to Grammar. I got accepted there but without a scholarship, so i didn't go. You're correct when you say it's 'rounded', part of GPS, so has Saturday sport. Also, there's an avid debating culture and the kids are from all backgrounds, not all are affluent. All are selective and apparently the teaching is great. Students are social and attend parties often. I can't say much about Ruse, but the environment would be hell in my opinion.

However, there must be some correlation between the school and student's results. You'd be naive in thinking that doing well in Year 6 correlates to a 99.95 ATAR. The school must have some bearing on student's results, even if it's 90% student's hard work and work ethic.

True, the point I was trying to make is that a persons success is largely dependent on the student themselves.

Your brother? Well, I'm assuming he's a teenager so he has raging hormones and thus he should go to Ruse so he can get himself a girlfriend... or at least socialise with girls.

Sure, it's a risk for the HSC - but you'll figure out by the end of it all, where his priorities lie. Where does he wish to find success and fulfillment? In the classroom? Or the bedroom?

time will tell :detective:

More seriously, can't you just talk to the Ruse-rs and Grammar-ers at uni and ask for their impressions? I don't know any Grammar-ers but I could point you to a few Ruse-rs.

My brother goes to Sydney Grammar, says the teachers are good. According to ruse kids I know of, yes, a lot of the teaching staff are pretty shit there.

A teacher from Sydney Boys moved to Ruse to teach (if those SBHSers know Mr Choy, well that's who I'm talking about)
