hi - I'm a year 12 student currently looking into a science/communications type degree, and wondered if anyone out there who does the degree or knows anything about it could give me a bit more info on what the degree is like and what subjects are involved etc.
Thanks!

Hey, i do media and communications, but the arts one. In the science one u gotta obviously do a major in science, and in first yr uve gotta do two maths subjects and the media subjects. Then in 4th yr, for ur internship, u go to a compnay that deals with science communications, unlike the arts one where u can go anywhere u want. Also in 4th yr u do specialised subjects that deal directly with science media comm. Um, the uni was actually thinking of scraping the science media communications course, or so we were told. So im not sure if theyve gone ahead and done that. U better check. Anything else u wanted to know?

Thanks for the info...If they were to scrap the course, do u think it would b possible to do a similar combination of subjects in the BA Media and Communications? Also, what do the media subjects actually involve and what do u plan to do when u have finished your degree? Do the media subjects require a solid grounding in English?

Hm. Well in the BA one it says ur other major can come from arts or economics faculty, but i think u may be able to do some science as well. Obviously u wont be able to do the specialised sci and media comm subject in 4th yr coz it wont exist. Well there are heaps of media subkjects we do throughout our 4 yrs. In the last semester we did the principles of media writing - which just basically taught us how to write the various forms of media like tv and radio scripts, news stories, etc. Nxt sem we do some media theory stuff, and then in the next few yrs we do things like radio and video production, media law and ethics, etc. I'm not sure yet what im gonna do, hopefully something in tv. Nah u dont need to really have a solid grounding in english, i mean there r some ppl in my course who had only done esl english. But basically the better u r at english, the better u will be when it comes to writing essays and such. But you have to do an english subject in first semster anyway seeing as its compulsory.

I emailed the uni for some more info and they told me that the course won't be offered next year =(
Does anyone have any suggestions for a similar course I might like? I've also been considering pharmacy, but I'm not sure...

I guess I'll just have to keep searching...I know that UNSW has a similar course, although I didn't like the course structure as much as USyd...but I might look into that...or a basic science degree...

Thanks again for all your help
