Could anyone answer this question I found in one of the SC past papers?

What name is given to the theory that seeks to explain why the continents are moving.

I think it's the theory of continental drift but I'm confused with the plate tectonic theory. Can it be the plate tectonic theory?

Thanks.

Its the Theory of Plate Tectonics. Continental drift is the means in which this theory works.

It should be plate tectonic. It asks why the continents are moving, this is upported by the theory of plate techtonic. The theory of continental drift doesn't explain it, all it does is say that they were once joined together.

The Theory of Plate Tectonics relates to that the lithosphere is divided into many continential and oceanic plates. It states that the plates move due to convection currents and gravitational forces within the asthenosphere.

That explains why the continents are moving - they're on plates which move as a result of convection currents in the mantle.
