I'm sorry but personal preference should not come into this debate - English shouldn't be made an elective just because a lot of people don't like the topic.

Anywayys, English SHOULD, and always will be, made compulsory -- the question is however on the content that is being taught. If anyone is learned enough they can see how many postmodernist assumptions are implicit in every single module. It's ridiculous.
Similarly, the English Advanced (and I'd assume Standard) syllabi revolve around texts 'representations of TEXT', 'TEXTS, values & context', 'critical study of TEXT', 'comparative study of TEXT'. The focus should not be on texts, it's more a class of literature than anything (with films, etc thrown in) -- the focus instead should be clearly set in the English language itself.

I'm drawling here and LOL you can tell I've been writing English practice responses 5 minutes before writing this -- I sound like a douche.

But yeah, just because you f'ers can't deal with letters (not pronumerals) and words instead of your 'precious numbers', doesn't mean that it should be labelled redundant.

Should Math be made compulsory?
I am sorry but personal preference is built upon the personal opinions that we hold and it appears from your post that you are babbling on about your own personal opinion. Genearal contradiction is always in place in a thread like this.

Re: Should English be Compulsory?

the trouble is all the reasons given for english being compulsory are just generalizations

that you could construct using similar language for any subject, watch this:

The HSC is a course primarily for the purposes of attending tertiary education.

The skills learnt in the biology course are foundations for attending tertiary education. It is a hypothesis driven science based on proposing and testing ideas through evidence & analysis - the most essential skill at university, especially in postgraduate studies, where reading source material and memorising essay paragraphs for an exam (i.e. english) will get you nowhere.

Yes, the content is irrelevant to daily life, but it is a SCIENCE course. It makes sense to find some sort of content that is relevant to that. And Biology had a mind-boggling impact on human life and society is so saturated with technology and medicine that it is stupid to ignore the subject, especially in light of population, disease and environmental issues of today. No subject can give us a greater perspective of our place as humans in the world around us.

You will have to write extended responses in university. You will need critical thinking. There is no doubt, and few subjects teach critical thinking better than biology.

By the way, the only essential thinking in english is taking the notes and handouts you get, deciding which ones best agree with your teacher's opinions and compiling them into an essay you memorise

The real question is "apart from scaling reasons, could you justify making english compulsory if it wasn't already?" :D

what else is there to learn? we all know how to speak and express ourselves efficiently. but yeh, we dont really learn english, its more literature, it should be called literature

even tho i dont really like english i think it has to be compulsory, no argument here - its the language we communicate in here in Australia

and tho i really like maths i dont think it should be compulsory
Can we express ourselves clearly? Because I know a few people doing Extension 1 English that can't, haha, sorry to those people. If people can articulate themselves well than the subject should be focused on refining those skills -- writing essays based on arguments (however at same time not trying to assert postmodernist assumption that context influences and will influence everything in its path~).

I'm sorry, what I meant to say is that people shouldn't be voting no because they simply do not like the subject or are not good at it, etc. They should base their personal opinions on something more solid than their own likes and dislikes.

Didn't mean to offend anyone/stir up argument~ Take my rant lightly, lolll.

Re: Should English be Compulsory?

Why shouldn't it be compulsory in a country that uses it? :p

If it is made an elective, people will start complaining about the English in the mathematics exams.

I reckon people would start complaining when they cant communicate well to others and then like it could just cause huge problems like in regard to jobs and stuff so yeah should def be compulsory

oh, there are oversea students that has only been in Australia for less than 2 years. And many socialise only with their own backgrounds, talking only their own language...

Another thing: What I really appreciate in English is that it teaches us to think more critically and analytically. It really pushes us, Australia, to keep up with the rest of society.

And look at the poll: English being compulsory has caught up to even up with the other option :p 28 vs 28

Re: Should English be Compulsory?

cohesion arising for migrants from compulasary english is evident....lol i kno so mani schools, top ones where the top 5 are dominated by ethnics....then again i question the syllabus and wheter its realli a test of literature....but yeaa....it should b compulsary, but content should b less and more focus on the SKILLS rather than the REGGERGETATION, AND it shuldnt count towards ur UAI as this current system destroys the window of oppourtunity for a reall realli smart maths kid to absolutly rape hsc...if he gets 60 in english. then again....realli smart maths kids wuldnt even bother with HSC

p.s. im ethnic...the end

Yes, english is an important subject. i am a good maths student and in years 7,8,9 and 10 i really hated english because i thought it is so irrelevent.to me shakespeare is "gay" was the biggest cliche. But my opinion changed in preliminary studies and i started to enjoy english equally as much as maths. Literature is important for the community.

Re: Should English be Compulsory?

Yes, it definatley should.

Australia is a lot more multicultural than what it used to be and a lot of people from non english speaking backgrounds come to australia and are totally lost because they dont know our language.

as well as this, even though a student may have the ability to make it all the way to year 12 successfully, they still might not have the correct literacy skills to answer HSC questions in the required manner, jeopardising their HSC.

This cheats the student as well, as they might leave school with their year 12 certificate tucked under their arm thinking it will be a lot easier to get a job but when they are unsure how to fill out a resume and make it sound professional and correct, it limits their job opportunities.

English sucks. It should only be compulsary for people who did badly in the SC.

The majority of people who vote english to be compulsary are women.
agree..
well, a vast majority would chose to do other subjects that will help in our uai rather than english.

consider the option
if any1 choses english for yr 11 then it would be compuslory to be done in yr 12
however on the otherhand, it would be a fantastic options for the new hsc students.

This is EXACTLY what happened to a mate of mine, 95+ in both his math exams, 68 in english = 71UAI. As a result he missed out on his computer science uni course and had to do a bridging course which added an extra 2 years to his degree.

see, the thing is, id read your whole post, but my quick look registered your horrible misspelling of regurgitation, overuse of ellipsis, and constant use of "realli" which is supposed to be "really".

and yes, i sound like a bitch, but i learnt to spell in primary school. even if youre "ethnic" - if you know youre bad at spelling, you could at least type it in word and use spellcheck? its not that hard.

The thing is, the current English course focuses on literature and the like, which to me are not essential life skills. Of course, I probably wouldn't be saying this if I actually did well in English :p

Grammatical skills, punctuation, spelling...they aren't difficult, but essay/analysis skills? No chance. :( English will definitely drag down my UAI...I hope to change that but it's pretty inevitable.
