I rekon it should be 1 unit of maths and 1 unit of english should be compulsory.

To make 4 units (2 math(s), 2 english) compulsory is a bit far...

I don't have an english speaking background. But I voted that it is compulsary. We are living in an English speaking country, and we are expected to know english. The things we are studying in English are also rather compulsary, don't you think?

I don't think it should be compulsory. If you're going for your UAI, you should know english already. Grammar, spelling, etc.

There are ofcourse international students who need to learn the language, so they can have separate classes (Like they do for scripture).

What they should do is to have a compulsory course worth perhaps say 1 unit about the English language and a 2 unit extension course on literature. Those doing 4 units could be exempted from the language component just like how Mathematics Extension 2 students do not actually sit the 2 unit exam.

No, english shouldnt be compulsory. There are many other subjects which can teach you how to write an adequate essay without the ''hidden meanings'' crap. (eg legal studies, history, business etc)

Plus, isnt maths a universal language? Yet thats not compulsory, and maths is actually practical and used in everyday life. You dont need to know how to analyse a poem to get ahead, imo anyway.

Saying that gives me a headache is an understatement.

By the way, in response to the poll, I was good at both Maths and English (although better at Maths) and I don't believe that English as it is should be compulsory, but there needs to be a serious attempt made at improving english skills. The amount of people who say "your" instead of "you're" and vice-versa is appalling, amongst other things, and this is coming from people who performed exceptionally well in the HSC.

By the time you're doing Preliminary/HSC English, I think you would be learning more than just to speak

not being able to read/write/speak your own language makes you appear stupid
at least that's my experience. no matter how good your ideas are, if you can't communicate them in a way that other people can understand, they will be either dismissed as lacking intelligence (even if the IDEA itself is really smart) or completely incomprehensible.

Yes it should be compulsory, althought I believe what is being taught and the way it is taught seems to be highly irrelevant to many and is very specialist - unless you're doing English in university you won't care about many of the topics.

I believe it should be more relevant to our progression into society - into tertiary education. I can't believe there's a "Academic Writing" course in first year at Sydney, that should be something the Higher School certificate should be doing.
