When writing an essay/short answer, should you define everything and explain how it works or would you assume that the markers know what it is? And would you change it for different verbs? eg: explain vs compare

For example in eco would you say
1) Economies of scale are (definition) and result in (effect)
2) Economies of scale result in (effect)

Or for bio

1) Adaptations occur as a result of natural selection, where the organism best suited for the selection pressures would survive and reproduce, in this case, the (organism) adapted
2) The (organism) adapted

1) Salvation, as the saving grace of God, provides a current and future goal for adherents
2) Salvation provides a current and future goal for adherents

*Don't mind the content just the structure 😅

The first examples are more effective at demonstrating your understanding. Especially for comparative questions.

For bio, spell absolutely everything out for them. They mark the exam ridiculously strictly because everyone knows the content and it's just a matter of exam technique by that point

This is so true, and it's the same with short answers in Chemistry
