Heya,

Couple days ago my computer would boot up with an error "Exception Occured - StartService: The Database is Locked". Googling such an uninformative error tells me that Start Service is used to start a service - wow! Doesn't seem to have any problems running though.

Then, same day, my computer wouldn't shut down - going through shut down menu or soft powering down (pressing power button, same thing as shutting down through menu) would let it shut down, but it would just boot right back up again.

Virus, adaware and spybot scans come up with nothing, all are updated.

New software/hardware would be one Fusion HDTV card and software, but I put that in after this started occuring.

Running:
Windows XP Pro SP1
Athlon64 3200+ 754
Gigabyte K8NNXP
1 gig pc3200 ram
Radeon 9600XT
Creative SB Audigy 2
Fusion HDTV DBV-T Lite

Anyone got any idea? It's crapping the hell outta me ><

Edit: Forgot my ram

If you could do a scan with HijackThis and paste the log, maybe we can narrow down which service is experiencing trouble starting.

Does it stop before or after it shows "Closing Network Connections..."? I noticed you have wireless lan. I had same problem from my wireless. I fixed it by disconnecting from the network manually first.

It doesn't stop in the process of shutting down - it shuts down totally and then it would boot right back up again through POST and everything.

turn your computer off completely
leave it for a while.

turn it on from a cold start
log into windows
give it a while for everything in the services, and startup to load
if all is up, shut it down
and see if thatt works

No didn't work :(

Safe mode I'll give it a go, and last known good config would just load some old restore point wouldn't it? Since sys restore didn't work...

Edit: Safe mode boots up no probs, tried it three times, still doesn't shut down properly though.

Maybe your computer is getting an error when it shuts down. Is auto restart for system failure turned on? Turn that off, try and shut down, and see if you get an error. This can be done thru control panel, system, going to the advanced tab, and clicking on startup and recovery settings. Have a look mate, good luck.

boot up from cold start
let windows settle to a reasonable state after logging in.

post hijackthis log.

you can try closing all known applications that are open, cleaning it out a bit.
then shutting down. if you manage to shut down properly, then it'll be some software affecting it. if not, best to back up everything and re-install windows.

hijackthis wouldn't really do much though because i think it might be some corruption of the system ptocesses or something

Hm actually I might just try use that Windows repair thing, and if that doesn't work then I'll just format/reinstall, seems like a windows thing becase its doing exactly the same thing as selecting restart from windows, so maybe a windoze problem.

Thanks guys.
