Well, why should he be removed?

The good students of Macquarie have voted him in as their representative. Until he's done something which can be proven to a) be illegal, or b) be against his terms of employment (whatever the equivalent is), he's staying in. And so he should. As far as I'm aware, it was an accurate and fair election.

The fact that there's actually bipartisan opposition to what Schwartz and the university are doing (yes, even the student politicians from the socialist left of NUS who hate Ma's guts and would do anything to see him destroyed) says a lot more about the situation than the SMH ever could.

There isn't an article because it isn't news yet, but after NUS NSW exec meets tonight (supposing they have quorum at the meeting) they'll have passed a bipartisan motion (Liberals, Labor Left and everything in between) condemning Schwartz and co for trying to wrest Macquarie student organisations out of the hands of students by ensuring that anyone controlling them is appointed by the University itself.

Just so we are clear:

SAM - the Union, Victor got fired from

MUSC - Student Council, the thing still run by Victor, but it is insolvent. This is the place where he pays his wife $76000 and has changed the constitution, jacked up membership, incorporated etc. God knows what needs to be done to get him off this.

University Council - the body that runs the uni, Victor was recently re-elected to this for his 3rd term on the trot, and 4th or 5th term on the whole. Will need to be charged or expelled to be removed.

This is just cause it annoys me when people say the wrong thing, like Students Council when they mean Uni Council, and it is not cause they are stupid, it is cause it is confusing. Hope it helps.

Clarification:

[1] SAM = Student Union. Student Board elected to two year terms.
Half Board re-elected each year. 2006 elections - held during the exam period.

[2] MUSC = Student Council. Traditionally 21 student councillors. Dubious election in late 2003. Returning Officer was GiGi Wong. Victor Ma was Returning Officer for her election as President of SUPRA (USYD). Victor & Co. *cancelled* the 2004 election. Victor & Co. wrote a new constitution & electoral regs. before the 2005 election - WITHOUT a referendum! Dubious 2005 election - no electoral roll for postal votes. Deputy Returning Officer was Kyle Kutasi (Yes, he is now the SAM Company Secretary).

[3] University Council. The governing body of the University. 1 student rep is elected.
This is what Nik Mueller and Victor Ma were recently contesting and Victor Ma won.
Apparently in 2006 all the ballot papers at DLC and RMC went missing.
I haven't heard anything to suggest the 2007 election was dubious.

I was under the impression that there was going to be an amalgamation of the three separate unions, but these would still contain elected people?

news hot off the press is that Ma has resigned from his all representative positions.

after 5 years at macq he will be missed by many, especially the 1,100+ that voted for him in the last election.

i look forward to the next batch of representative macq kids starting july.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is FASCINATING.

Do we know any more information? Like, was it a voluntary resignation, or more of a "I'm resigning because if I don't I'll be fired"? And, who will be taking his place?

it is all on page 3 of smh today.

in other news who will be the new student rep on university council?

the council will appoint the person who was "last eliminated in the last election". unless there is something i missed, i assume that is me.

exciting times peeps. i expect it won't get much more exciting than this while i'm at club macq.

That is so totally one of the most mysterious questions of all time.

ie, "why the fuck is/was Victor Ma at MQ?"
