Hey people,

I'm considering in doing the B software eng/B science next year cos I know its got a good reputation. However, I'm clueless about computers and software (i'm eager to learn tho)

What I wanna know is... how does software engineering compare to the other streams of engineering such as electronic/mechatronic/telecommunications/aeronautical...etc..etc

Is anyone actually doing this degree that wants to comment on it? How "hard" is it?

Thanks!!!

hi. I've got friends doing software engineering. First year is common subjects and u specialize in 2nd yr. Software engineering you do not need to do the leet physics (it's hard - many ppl r put off my this) instead you choose another sci subject. No test for one of the engineering courses, instead you build a project. This is degree is a breeze in the 1st sem (if you choose not to do physics or defer it for later), expect a bludge.

I'm not sure, but I'm under the impression from friends that you could count the girls in the entire engineering faculty on two hands. If it would bother you being the only girl in your lectures that is....

Ok...

I'm not that worried about physics (or... should I be?) cos I quite enjoy it.
So... there are less than 10 girls in the whole program? 10 out of ... 200 in total? Geezz.. you can't be serious! thats puny ~

What about asians?? don't tell me the engineering faculty is swarming with those mathematically-talented-glasses-wearing-library-dwellers ?? (Oh.. I'm being such a hypocrite..lol)

I said 10 in the faculty, that's what friends tell me anyway. They are engineering students and desperate, so perhaps they are exaggerating for sympathy or something. I doubt the faculty is swarming with asians, ANU is fairly mixed when it comes to nationalities IMO.

im currently doing 1st year systems engineering.

in the first engineering course, which all engineers have to do (including software engineers), theres about 20 girls out of 180. they dont exactly 'stand out' so sometimes it sorta seems like 10 in the whole faculty. i hear psychology is the place. as for all the asians, you get used to them eventually. i think the course is about 1/3 asians.

if your clueless about computers and programming the first year computing courses may be a bit overwhelming at first. the computer science faculty only has one first year course for engineers, so for some its too hard, for others its too easy.

ANU only offers 2 engineering degrees, 'Systems engineering' this is the common engineering degree where you can major in materials, robotics, sustainable systems, ect. i get the feeling it sets you up for a management role in an engineering field.
And the other degree is 'software engineering', which speaks for itself, its kind of a cross between IT and systems engineering from what i understand.

Also you can combine either of these degrees with most other in the uni. Science is pretty common.

hard to say whether snobby or not I mainly hang with domestic students. on the odd occassion that I conversed with a fob they seem relunctant to talk (snobbery?).

Well their English isn't that bad. I'd say its probably more to do with cultural differences.

when you mean fobs you mean int students from singapore, hk and so on?
I take it the rest of the asians are local kids?

Fobs = fresh of boat, applies to whoever just entered the country but generally directed toward Indians & Chinese since they make up the bulk of international students.
Rest of the local kids are asians yes.

*nods, I do know what a fob is but yeah I didn't phrase the question well.
thanks
but I'd expect there wouldn't be as many int students in law?
