hey! this is my first post here and i just wanted to ask some questions about ANU

I got accepted into Arts/Law and into Ursula Hall.

1) How big are the desks? I'm thinking of bringing my comp up and I'm wondering whether I'll have heaps of desk space, or be trying to write assignments with a giant lcd screen in my face

2) From what I've heard about Ursula, it seems to have a reputation as a "nerdy" college with large hippie influences. How did this start? and is this reputation warranted?

3) Even though it's a fully catered college, is there like a kitchenette or some small token cooking facility?

4) What's all this random toga stuff I keep hearing about?

Anyway, thanks in advance

Hi michaelll, the reputation is not entirely warranted, although they do say that like attracts like (hence the nerdy ones go to Ursula). I've been told that most colleges/halls are essentially the same. The toga stuff is basically where you wear a toga to a party.

And you could have asked me this on MSN. :p

Oh yeah, I still owe you Avril Lavigne. :D

By the way, is it possible to defer a degree at ANU? What about a residential college placement?

Defer, yes. College place, no. (If you're a guarantee student though, it doesn't really matter.)

Some of the faculties are less organised than others so not all courses have timetables listed. Any drama course and NEWM1001 are ones that I have noticed are missing at the moment. If you email someone, they might be able to let you know what the timetable for your course is likley to look like.

i can't remember the ursies rooms that well other than them being rather long and skinny (but not as skinny as B&G rooms). i'm pretty sure however that they'd have the same amount of desk space as most other colleges, which is definitely enough to have a computer as well as writing space.

no idea how it started. wouldn't really call ursies hippieish. um. but most of the ursies kids i know are definitely quite nerdy/weird. there's one who isn't, but he doesn't like it there - got told off for drinking (on a thursday night!) by the dean. hah. so yeah, i guess the atmosphere there must be reasonably nerdy. then again, there'll always be some sort of socialising going on.

no idea, but if it's anything like the other catered colleges then there should be a couple of small kitchens available to cook if you need to.

Eh, well if Ursula lives up to its reputation, there's nothing wrong with being an outcast among outcasts. :p For the fun of it, I planned to rock it to its knees if I got looked over by John (I put Ursies as second pref).
