Ok, i have to do a speech for my first assessment and one of the things we have to cover is "Evaluate the roles of key individuals, groups and events". My speech topic is Verdun.

To get to the point. what should i write about to cover the groups aspect???

The respective armies could cover the groups requirement. Also perhaps specific battalions etc. Another group could be military commanders. Hope that helps a bit.

The groups are at the bottom of the syllabus documents. How did Verdun affect morale of the Soldiers, Women & Children, and the Homefront? As well as individuals like Churchill etc

Haig. That's who you write about. Haig or Kitchener. The teachers love it when you bitch about how crap they were. I made the smart-arse mistake of writing the opposite, that Haig was an awesome commander and only managed 17/20. You should have seen the margins! Filled to the brim with rebuttals from the pages of any of Denis Winter's history books on WWI

So in summary, write the "correct" POV and write about crappy Generals and Commanders like Haig.

Churchill - First Lord of the Admiralty? It's not really that relevant unless we're talking about the ocean... or landships/tanks?

The groups aspect can be the entire allied command if you really want. Depends on what other aspects you need to cover like homefront/anti-war etc?

I'm not sure if using Haig is a particularly good idea when discussing Verdun. Verdun was largely a battle between the Germans and the French, and as such, Haig wasn't involved (I know it's fun to bitch about him, but still...). The only way in which he is relevant is that the Somme offensive lead to some German troops being withdrawn from Verdun to the Somme front.

The major leaders in the Verdun campaign were;
Germany-General von Falkenhayn.
France-Henri Petain.

It's important to remember the reasons for which Verdun was fought..It was explicitly a battle of attrition, the aim being stated as bleeding France white...

Yeah i know Haig wasent really involved, finished it today, it was a bloody bitch of a thing to write lol.
