Suppose there's a question:
Find the integral of (1 - cos12x) dx

If in the next line of working, I were to accidentally write this as:
x - 1/12sin2x + C,
and I carried it through to the final answer, would I most probably lose a mark for this careless error? (i.e. 1/2 marks) or would the marks be awarded for the "integrating" process instead? (i.e. I would get 2/2 marks).

I did something similar to that in my trial and I lost a mark- it was out of three.

I think you'll get 1 mark only.

but, suppose that its part (a).
in part (b) u need to use the result from part (a), which is x - 1/12sin2x +C.
you will get full marks in part(b) if you do it correctly based on the sin2x.

Ok, fair enough.
Seems right that I would lose 1 mark.
But suppose in your "Part (a), Part (b)" hypothetical that your wrong answer in (a) made the question in (b) slightly easier (maybe two or three lines of working less), would you fail to gain full marks for (b)?

If it made it easier yes you probably would lose a mark.

howbout if your error made the question harder / impossible (divide by zero etc etc)
would you still be awarded full marks? (this is for transcription error or whatever you call it)

If it was harder and you did it, you'd get the marks.

If it was impossible...
how can you get the marks for something you haven't done :p

true, hehe

anyway in the ext2 trial I chose the wrong area to be rotated when finding the volume when I got 2 out of 6. and my choice doesn't make it easier. in fact its slightly harder.

lol a friend of mine for his ext-2 trial did the same question 3 times each time getting 3 different answers.
The teacher gave him the marks though :)

I believe that transcription errors are ignored in general maths only, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

in the ext1 paper, I did something using an incorret methord and got the wrong answer (its a show question). then I re-did it using the correct method but I did a kind of transcription error. but then I crosses out the thing that uses the correct method and wrote "ignore" and its not marked at all.
so a guess my tip is that in the actual HSC dont cross out anything when you cant get the right answer.

speaking of non-maths subjects, simple mistakes like 1 + 1 = 3 might be ignored in subjects like physics... iff it is deemed appropriate.

our teacher said just do a neat line over it, they still read the marking
but if your 100% sure its wrong do that 'ignore' and if you accidently crossed it, do 'correct' with an arrow etc

Hhhmmm.
Say for instance, I was just doing a 2U trial paper for practice. It asked to draw a diagram of an area using the data provided (part i worth 2 marks), and then it asked to evaluate this area (part ii which was worth 4 marks). I actually drew the diagram slightly wrong (-1 mark), but I still managed to evaluate the area (different to the answers of course) and because of my diagramatic error, the evaluation was the same if not harder to do. Would I still be awarded the full 4 marks if it were in a real exam?
