Hi guys, is y=-2x^2 - 5x + 3 a parabola?

Any function with the leading coefficient having a power of two will be a parabola.

E.g. y=x^2 is a typical parabola.
y= -100000000x ^2 +x+ 2 will still be a parabola.

Yes, basically there is a term called the "degree" this is the term (letter) with the highest power. In this case the degree is 2. All functions that have a degree of 2 is a parabola. As an extension all functions with an even degree have a "U" shape and all functions with an odd degree has an inverted "S" shape of course excluding other functions like circle, semi-circle etc...

It's a quadratic and it's in the form ax^2 + bx + c (general quadratic form), whenever you graph a quadratic you get a parabola, if the there is a minus next the squared term, the parabola is sad face i.e. upside down, otherwise it's a happy face like this: :) lol
