Hey there,

Currently, these are the subjects I'm taking next year:

Maths Adv + Extn
English Advanced
Chemistry
Physics
Modern History
Business Studies

Thats 13 units. I'm quite happy with my subjects except for science. I'm not sure whether to do physics and chemistry....I know its hard to achieve good results in these subjects. So do you think it would be wise to replace chemistry with Biology, although I find it so boring or with some other subject?

Thanks.

Ok thanks. I've decided to modify my subjects...

Do you think its wise to do English Extension? It is a lot work, along with doing maths extn and 2 sciences?

Also, I'm thinking of replacing BUS with Economics? It scales higher, right?

yes economics indeed scales higher than business + if you like it English Extension then obviously go for it, but it's also better to ease your self down a-bit.

dont do bio if you find it boring. you're not likely to put in the effort if you find a subject boring.
but bio is very interesting :)

do both physics and chemistry. it seems that you picked those two because you wont be bored with it and that you are just worried about the challenge. If you do not have the drive for it, you wont do as well so keep both of them.

Out of the sciences, chemistry and physics are the ones that interest me the most..

Thanks for the advice guys

I remember being in your place last yr. I chose both physics&chem last year. Now I am dropping both! Physics really interested me, but it was too much. But seeing as your a bit of a Maths genius - I suggest you drop chem. Till yr 10 I excelled in chem. Now I am in the pits. Chem is way harder in yr 11. I suggest you do Bio instead of Chem.

In my opinion, Biology is quite interesting. It interests me because you can apply it to everyday activites - for example the HSC module "The Search for Better Health" gives background knowledge for interpreting scientific information related to health and disease that is presented on the news.

HSC Chemistry (to me) isn't an "exciting and dangerous" course, like another person said. It's only dangerous if you're stupid and incompetent enough to drink hydrogen peroxide or splash high-molar acid on your skin. Also, learning about covalent bonding isn't exactly exciting. It might be mildy exciting if you get to do the "Biochemistry of Movement" option topic in Yr 12.

Physics is good. It's interesting, but it's on a grander scale than Chem and Bio. Chem deals with things on a very small scale, e.g. atoms. In Physics you learn about the universe and how machines and, to a degree, the natural world works.

Earth and Enviro Science would be interesting too, if you're into fossils and the like. If you're not confident about doing Physics and Chemistry together, try it out, then change subjects if it's not for you. Remember it doesn't really matter what subjects you do for your HSC, they have no bearing on what courses you can study at university. Even the HSC has a relatively small effect on what you may study at tertiary level or in the workforce ...if you ever do work, which you don't have to in order to be a good person. Just try to choose subjects you think will be bearable, if you hate your subjects, why would you do the HSC and put yourself through two years of pain?

How do you know that I excel in maths? yeah i've been advised not to do chemistry as it is quite challenging and difficult. I still want to go with Physics and Chemistry.

@ Schoey93: Thanks so much for your piece of advice, but I dont think I will do well at Biology or Earth and Environmental science, simply because I have no interest in these areas.

Which list do you think is a better choice?

List 1: (13 units)

Maths Extn 1
English Adv
Chemistry
Physics
Modern History
Economics

List 2: (12 units)

Maths Extn 1
English Extn 1
Physics
Chemistry
Economics

I dont really enjoy English, but I do recieve high marks, and I have been recommended by my teachers to do English Extention, though I''m not sure coz its going to be a big workload along with maths and science.

Please offer some advice.

imo chem is harder than phys... but yr11 chem is harder than yr12 chem... overall its not 'that' hard... but u really need to know ur stuff and study for it... there is also a lot of memorising in chem compared to physics...

thats my 2cents...
