If you can spin it from the right angle, the Lord of the Rings (film) could actually be done... I think a girl in my class from last year did it, or at least seriously contemplated it.

I would be cautious about doing LOTR though, as it is a prescibed text for one of the other EE1 modules. Sometimes, the markers don't like that.

green eggs and ham by Dr Suess
Sam-I-Am = global - fast paces, pushy, trying to impose views/ideas/actions
other bloke = local - slow paced, trying to relax(reading paper in first scene), resists Sam and his new/wierd ideas but eventualy gives in.
green eggs and ham = changing morals and expectations that global tries to propagate

RFTG - bowling for columbine?

hiya study buddies,

i'm thinking of using 'bowling for columbine' for one of the texts for my half-yearlies next week. It's good for your sort of wider-society's-impact-on-local-town type thing, but i'm wondering if i need something that address issues of other countries being affected by global (or western) culture... which it doesn't. also, not sure if i could work 'retreat' in there.. if ya know what i mean. my teacher suggested i use it, but i'm still not sure because of it only looking at america.. any thoughts?

The whole additional texts thing is REALLY buggin me out!!! There are only so many times that I can force nearly a year's worth of thinking onto a text that is really pushing the boudaries of being relevant!!! I really like the Green Eggs and Ham thing though - I borrowed it from the library and it actually works with the whole representational thing that the wonderful person posted!! ThanX Heaps for that - one down, only one or two additional texts to go!! LOL...

In relation to using non-20th Century texts,

You ARE allowed to use texts from before then. Quite a few of my friends did it, and they got into the top band. I also have the "OK" from the creator of the RFTG syllabus himself.

Whilst you can sort of see the whole local/global thing in a fair number of texts, the more cultural stuff you can get in there, the better :S It's a lot easier to analyse your texts if they have a lot more in common (eg local languages, theme of sea changes etc), but if you're up the the challenge of comparing, say, Heaney to a Linkin Park song, then please, be my guest.

I take it we can cover post-20th century related texts, despite the syllabus's specifications? Finding relevant late twentieth century articles is just about impossible, and a lot of the 1990-2000 stuff has been overdone.

heya chaps, I'm using a website created by a historian and social analyst (Craig Bellamy) as related material as are quite a few others in my class... its a top site about globalisation and its effect on his 'local'..

has no1 else looked at south park? geez! look at it! just about everything could be used. but dont use a wallmart something this way comes....thats mine.
lol. but alot of them could be used, like the harbucks episode, that could be pro globalisation but the townspeople initially "retreated" from harbucks, the global influence. erm...whatelse...dudes south park, or anything written by those two is absolute gold! you can use team america as one text, and use an article about what the allies/un are doing in reaction to terrorism (labelling all muslims while trying to be politically correct) and link them really really well, and that will in a way link to faruq in "the castle", as he is a refuge seeker (left his country because of hostilities). the castle will like well with the small town element of south park, as well as the feeling of righteousness in team america (although team america was very obnoxious lol)

dont stress about the whole late 20th century part, as long as its after the specified year they arent going to say "oh it was 2005 therefore everything you just said is void". If you choose texts carefully and link them strongly to argue your point clearly and concisely then they wont care if it was 2001, 1997 or 2005!
