Hey, Would it be a good idea to go to a doctor any asking for prescription anxiety tablets, such as Beta Blockers?

Beta blocker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Beta blockers protect against social anxiety: "Improvement of physical symptoms has been demonstrated with beta-blockers such as propranolol; however, these effects are limited to the social anxiety experienced in performance situations."

I have been told that these drugs are to be taken an hour or two before a public event and it will stop any anxiety or un-calm behavior, they last for around three hours.

Would it be a good idea to take them before a speech or presentation?

I know that it is probably dangerous and illegal to use prescription medicine in this manner, that is why I was recommended 'beta blockers', because they are a short-term anxiety tablet, meaning you only take them before the public event, not for an extended period of time.

Would you recommend this to a nervous speaker?

Really? You're going to take pills? That's plain fucking weak.

Just practice. You're going to have to do a lot more in your life than just deliver an inconsequential speech in front of 20 people who don't really give a shit. If you're going to start taking pills for school, get ready for a future filled with prescription drugs.

When i listened to peoples speeches, I couldn't give a shit about what they said. I listened for about 30 seconds and then went back to scribbling on my pencil case, as did most of the class.
Forgot what people think of you and just try and give a good speech.

Hey, thanks for the replies.

I know it probably seems unmanly or weak to take medication to do something everyone has to do.
That's a viewpoint I can understand.

I also see the viewpoint that everyone has to do it, and probably everyone will be nervous to do it, why not have an advantage over them and gain more marks?

most people will not even remember how your speech was or what you talked about. Everyone is day dreaming about something else

Dude, this kind of thing is made for people with intense social phobias so they don't break down into shuddering messes whenever they get placed into particularly daunting circumstances.

You're a school kid who has to do a class speech... are you serious?

Hey, thanks for the replies.

These tablets, "Beta Blockers" are to be taken for public events such as speeches.
There are plenty of other anxiety tablets that are supposed to be taken all day, everyday. Those are the type to be prescribed to the "break-down psychopaths"

Someone posted that these pills would be on my record if prescribed to me, I am unsure, but it seems logical to me that only high authority could ever view my record, such as doctors or police. I doubt bosses or employers ever could.

I have two contrasting viewpoints:
1. Get an advantage on everyone else.
2. Your a kid, you don't need medicine.

Should have put a poll in.
See how many people would be interested if they had the chance, to use medicine to increase their marks in a HSC speech or presentation.

So far, by the responses, nobody...

if i personally had the chance [which i do], i would not take medication to increase my marks in a hsc speech,

a] because i adore speech-making and
b] because as maycat has rightly said, you're just a school kid and this is just a class speech. these types of tablets are for people with actual phobias, not those who are just "nervous speakers". do you get actual panic attacks? i doubt it. and would you seriously feel better about getting a better mark than all those kids who were as nervous as you, but dealt with the fear and did the best they could on their own? would you feel right about it? in my mind, taking these type of things when you don't have a medically diagnosed condition is synonymous with cheating.

my advice to you would be to work on the nerves and teach yourself to get over it. it's most likely that you're going to have to give speeches many more times in your lifetime and do you want to be popping pills for your whole life?

so let me get this straight:
you're considering taking anti-anxiety pills to gain an advantage over your potentially nervous classmates in a speaking assessment?

that's ridiculous.
if your hands were shaking to the point that you continuously drop your palm cards and every second word is mangled beyond the point of understanding, then maybe. but otherwise, what the hell?

They're not actually for people with phobias. "these effects are limited to the social anxiety experienced in performance situations." (example: an inexperienced symphony soloist)"

Go natural honey.
You're doing unknown damage to your body by taking them.

everything i've read on them state that they're used for reducing the anxiety in panic disorders, GAD [generalised anxiety disorder], social phobias and other phobias.
but either way, it's still ridiculous.
& +1 to assiduous' post above.

i get a hard erection from those pills
you're using the wrong pills. I had the same problem but then I read the label. Beta blockers sounds and looks a lot like Viagra.

You clearly do not know me very well or else you wouldn't have stated the obvious.
