Bali nine drug mule Renae Lawrence was sentenced to life in prison today for attempting to smuggle heroin to Australia.

The Denpasar District Court handed down the life term despite a call by prosecutors to sentence her to 20 years.
Today's verdict was the first handed down by the court.
The tough sentencing came despite calls by prosecutors to show some leniency as a reward for her cooperation with Indonesian police from almost the start.
Indonesian drug squad officers and prosecutors used information from her to establish the inner workings of the gang that tried to smuggle a total of 8.3kg of heroin from Bali.
Lawrence is the only woman among the Bali nine and was one of four so-called drug mules caught at Bali Airport with heroin strapped to their bodies.
Since her arrest on April 17 last year she has steadfastly maintained that she carried the drugs only after being threatened by the alleged bossess of the gang - Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran - who face possible death sentence verdicts in court tomorrow.
However, the three-judge panel said they did not believe Lawrence's claim that she had faced death threats.
"The council of judges found no proof of the use of force in this crime, therefore the defendant has to be sentenced as fairly as possible,'' said one judge I Gusti Ngurah Astawa.
Chief judge I Kutut Widnya then announced that Lawrence had been found guilty and should spend the rest of her life behind bars.
Lawrence stared blankly ahead as the verdict and sentence were read out.
She then spoke briefly to her defence lawyer but was escorted out of the packed courtroom by guards before she could talk with her father Bob Lawrence.
Other Bali nine defendants will hear their verdicts over the next two days.
The two alleged masterminds of the drug ring - Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran - will know tomorrow whether they are to be sentenced to death by firing squad.
The rest of the group are facing prosecution demands for life sentences.

Re: Renae Lawrence - Life in Prison. First of Bali 9 to be Sentenced

She should have been given death.

Prosecutors only asked for 20 years and she got life anyway, so hopefully that means the rest will get harsher penalties than what was asked for and will all get the firing squad. They are a bunch of morons and they deserve to be shot. I also won't have to hear about them anymore which is a bonus.

I had no idea they could give her life imprisonment for being THAT ugly and man-like.

They probably only do that when their prisons get too full...

Re: Renae Lawrence - Life in Prison. First of Bali 9 to be Sentenced

you guys are all sick....
they did something stupid... bloody stupid i admit but hasn't everyone. sure theres is a bit bigger than what most people do but a majority of your teen life you just laugh about how much of an idiot you were and how lucky you were that you didn't get caught. well these guys did. they are now spending the next SEVENTY YEARS of their life paying for one mistake.
sure if the drugs got through to australia it wouldve cost a number of lives but it was still one mistake. i don't believe any one who is not purely evil should be locked up for the rest of their lives. noone has the right to do that to another person.
also think about mr rush who is the father who called up the australian police just because he was trying to do the right thing for his son, how must he be feeling.
a little compassion people.

Unfortunately, no mistake in teenage years comes close to the mistake the Nine have made. What's worse, it wasn't even a mistake at all.

She's a worthless bitch anyway - at least we don't have to pay for her and her babies now.

Life is a ridiculous sentence altogether. So now she's going to uselessly occupy space while she slowly rots to death. I'd prefer death by firing squad, myself.

lol I would be too.

Back to the topic, she deserves it. She smuggled drugs in the other countries, got caught in the act. She is not a kid anymore.

IF she keeps low profile in the next dacades of so, she might have the chance to get back to Australia after paying lots of money to the Indonesian government IF.

Pretty much as expected really isn't it? I wonder if it would've made more sense if they all sought representation from the same attorney. What are you gonna do.

Nice avatar btw, it's Almost Famous isn't it?

I'm sure we can expect the same human rights protests, pleas to the government to intervene in foreign law and finally calls for a moment of silence.

Yes it's Almost Famous :)

Re: Renae Lawrence - Life in Prison. First of Bali 9 to be Sentenced

Perhaps we could rename this topic to encompass all the bali nine verdicts?

Sentences so far:
DEATH
- Andrew Chan
- Myuran Sukumaran

LIFE IMPRISONMENT
- Renae Lawrence
- Scott Rush
- Michael Czugai
- Martin Stephens

I watched Chan's sentencing, and a reaction from him was non-existant. No emotion at all. Its like he dosent even care about his life.

I'm glad he did...

All deserve at least Life sentences, given their crimes. Just because you aid other police investigations does not mean you should immediately get leniency. These people are merely selfish, greedy gamblers who lost and are now angry because the outcome was not preferable to them.

I have lost all care factor for any Australians caught overseas with drugs. I care not for the Bali 9, I care not for Corby, I cared not for the guy that got hanged. If you are dumb enough not to heed warning, then be prepared to suffer consequences.

The only advice I have for the male members is to tie their soap to their hands in the shower recess.

How can I be jovial about such a thing.
