It has been shown that where initiatives such as "safe" injecting rooms are introduced they kill more people than they save. In any case, while I disagree with the death penalty absolutely, he committed a crime in another jurisdiction and should face the consequences.grag balbrady said:i thought you liberals loved the free market

good point, very good point. i guess its because his case has been given a face and a name, and we've seen his family and friends desperately trying to save him. there are plenty of other cases like this, it makes you realise this is quite a common thing. every life is worth saving (well, almost every life, rite?)White Rabbit said:While I do feel sympathy due to the mitigating circumstances sourrounding Nguyen - you have to ask what of the other 400 odd that have been hung in singapore - what makes this guys life worth more than others who've suffered the same fate?
I totally agree, I feel sorry for the poor guy but he broke the law. If he isn't punished then other people would think that it would be okay to break laws in other countries just because we are from Australia. Who knows, mabye some day people would hate Australians for this reasonWhite Rabbit said:While I do feel sympathy due to the mitigating circumstances sourrounding Nguyen - you have to ask what of the other 400 odd that have been hung in singapore - what makes this guys life worth more than others who've suffered the same fate?
The media have taken hold of the story because he's australian. A story about some unimportant asian people getting hanged in asia wouldn't sell papers. When there is an australian involved, screw everyone else. A situation such as this only becomes a horrible human rights atrosity when it involves one of our own.White Rabbit said:While I do feel sympathy due to the mitigating circumstances sourrounding Nguyen - you have to ask what of the other 400 odd that have been hung in singapore - what makes this guys life worth more than others who've suffered the same fate?

write letters to amnesty! Even if they don't read them, one letter (as my teacher says, she represents amnesty) represents the wishes of 100 people. And when is he going to be hanged btw?
