Is it just me or is anyone else finding it hard to find sites that aren't blocked. It is coming to a point where it is difficult to use the internet to study at school. I was under the impression that these passwords that they were giving us were so they could moniter out web-surfing and stop people who were looking at porn or whatever doing that. It is becoming impractical to study at school.

Re: The DE Portal. Help or Hinder?

Hinder.

I agree, some sites that the Dept of Education has deemed "inappropriate" is quite unorthodox. This new control the government has over New South Wales' schools to "monitor" student activities is ridiculous; this system only makes the students victims. One of the problems with the system from my point of view is the lack to challenge authority (the people who block them). Students who have had a site block for all the wrong reasons do not have the ability to complain; only teachers do.

I suggest checking if port 22 is open and tunnelling over SSH if it is.

Re: HSC - All my own work

I don't think I did anything on this o_o

But I agree with post one, on a positive end however. They are encouraging us to lie...just lie lie lie, lie that you agree with not stealing off the internet...do the bad to be good. Or else if you are honest...you would lose :)

Their point is to teach you that you must sin in order to suceed...that is the moral :) ... right? So when you go out there ... you don't make a fool out of yourself for the sake of honesty.

They set up these block websites to encourage students to think smarter to how to get around them...they make these stupid plagiarism rules...all just to tell you to plagarise as it gives people the idea "oh, yeh! Thats a good idea plagiarise!" They eliminate those who are dumb, whom follow the rules straightly.

Those who are smart however, will bend these rules and learn more... and therefore past their test :)
Rich people don't work hard to get rich, they think of strategies to bend rules of law, etc.

Really, what. the. f***? has the education system come to? First, they blocked hotmail + gmail and introduced the DET email accounts + massive information censoring and what did that lead to? A bunch of high school students wasting time trying to get around the system + a lot less work done. My visual design work with photoshop last year was basically halted in its tracks because I couldn't use google images + majority of websites containing the images were blocked. And now, apparently a page on philosophy is categorised as 'gaming/personal use'. Even multiple teachers at my school have admitted that the system is useless and is an obstacle to work.
Yeah. Its crap, I hate it, all I can say is try to find some proxy sites that allow you to get around the crap system that stop students from learning. Although they seem to be blocking these faster than people can make new ones.

Since this post is old, have they changed to a white list?

I think that students should get together with other organisations such as SRC, P&C, etc.. and protest to the DET. I mean seriously what they do is stupid.

And so, the DET has moved to a new level of idiocy, with this 'All my own work course'
BOS is responsible for AMOW, not DET.

Re: Wtf? 'All my own work' course?

I believe that there is a white list now, which is stupid, because some sites are not recognised by the DET, and teachers must put in a request for such sites to be 'unblocked' before the teacher conducts the lesson. Not to mention that the process takes about a week.

I reckon they should get rid of all the censoring. Teachers generally monitor students using computers anyway.

Well, that's what our school used to do. Before the DET forced this new system upon them (and took away our access to Hotmail and Gmail).

However, a student hacked into the Administrators' account and deleted all the 'censored' sites. He was a hero amongst students - not so much amongst the Deputy Principals who gave him a week's suspension.

That's shit. I agree, its completely stupid. It's a waste of teachers time, it stops students from learning and is a waste of taxpayer's money.

I agree, there should be no censoring whatsoever, Hmm.. well maybe those porn sites should be blocked, put apart from that, nothing else should be.

We should protest!

Students don't look at porn sites in school, anyway. In coed schools, guys just don't look at porn in front of girls, and in single sex schools....well - there's teachers roaming about anyway. It'd be really embarassing if you did get caught.

Yeah.. It sucks to be at a public school where the DET makes your school do what they want, not what is best for the students. And seriously what was the point in DET blocking Hotmail and Gmail!? I mean, how are students meant to send email!!!

[comment]Aerath, I just saw you go to Syd Boys. You know Robert Dowdell?[/comment]

Especially when half the DET emails don't work, anyway.

Re: Wtf? 'All my own work' course?

I hate the det portal! It blocks seriously, everything. My website (an assignment) for multimedia is blocked and theres noting on there yet except a layout and the keywords. My teacher emailed them and they still won't unblock it.

Hinder. Obvious answer. The DET portal is so damn annoying. It takes a year to load a page, and it blocks everything and anything - including those sites that are educational. I believe a teacher once tried to conduct a lesson using a website...which was blocked, of course.

Hinder. You can't get to any [useful/interesting] sites, the portal itself looks tryhard and stupid, and the most fun you can get out of it is trying to hack other people's secret questions.

I have a friend who tried to email an essay to our teacher using school email... It was blocked, apparently because of "inappropriate content". She's mystified as to what was inappropriate about it.

In Modern once, we were meant to be researching Nazi Germany. The DET internet wouldn't allow us to use google to include "nazi" as one of our search terms.

Even the teachers don't like the new system, but there's nothing they can do about it. It's detrimental to our learning; but there's nothing we can do about it.
